Methane (CH4) gas generated
from anaerobic digesters also
contains hydrogen sulfide (H2S)
resulting from decomposing
sludge. The H2S gas is usually
removed. Methane gas is used
to fuel compressors, boilers
and engines. Any unused gas is
then flared off to the
atmosphere. Applications exist
for Models S4000C/T and
IR2100 Infrared Point Gas
Detector because of high O2.
The Model IR5000 is also used
for CH4 detection in large waste
treatment plants.

to Incinerator
De-watering System
Model S4000T Intelligent Sensors
are positioned both sides
of the compressor
Incoming
Sludge
Incoming sludge from waste
treatment facilities contains
hydrogen sulfide and methane
gas. The sludge is transported
through a spiral conveyor into
the de-watering system where
the water is removed. The
outgoing conveyor transports
the remaining solids to an
incinerator. Model S4000T
Intelligent Sensors are
positioned so that during
operation of the compressor
any escaping H2S will be
detected.
Wet/Dry Wells & Lift Stations
S4000C/T and HVS4000
Manhole
Sewer or Vault
Wet wells and dry wells are confined
spaces which can develop a buildup of H2S and CH4. This gas
concentration can become explosive
and/or toxic to the level of personnel
danger. Because personnel are
required to service these areas, O2
deficiency monitors are installed to
ensure that oxygen levels do not
drop below the regulated levels
needed to sustain life.
Models HVS4000 / HVS400 and
S4000C/T’s can all be used for these
applications.

Pipeline
Landfills produce Methane
and H2S gas generated
from decomposing
materials. The recovered
methane is used to fuel
compressors, engines and
co-generation plants.
These facilities provide an
excellent opportunity for
Model S4000C Intelligent
Sensors to detect the
methane gas.
Cogeneration
S4000C Gas Detector
Many sewage treatment
facilities use Methane
generated from digesters
to power electrical
generating plants. This
power is used to run the
facilities as a supplement
to purchased power from
utility companies. Model
S4000C Intelligent Sensors
are used to monitor leaks
in the co-generation
building
Selling against the
Competition
• Fixed Gas Detector Competitors typically found in the Water &
Wastewater Industry are:
–
–
–
–
–
–
ATI
Capital Controls
Foxcroft
Regal
MSA
US Filter
• Advantages of HVS4000 and HVS400 are:
– HVS400 is small and compact by design with a 4-20mA signal that
can be used as the “front-end” sensor for a SCADA system directly
– HVS400 2-wire self contained transmitter with sealed electronics is
very suitable for corrosive chlorine service
– Calibration prompts can be viewed on the LED window, without the
added expense of a transmitter housing with a display
Selling against the
Competition
– End-users have reported that the HVS400/4000 is rugged and looks
more like an industrial product than competitors… such as “Foxcroft,
Capital or Regal”… who more closely resemble “Swimming Pool Type”
chlorine detectors
– Most Cl2, SO2, H2S applications do not require a XP rated enclosure,
however that’s all many competitors have to offer. The generalpurpose enclosure on HVS400 sensors, will keep system cost down
– End-users like the “potted & sealed” HVS400 electronics because
corrosive gases cannot access the PC board components
– Galvanic isolation on the HVS4000 allows hot swapping of sensors and
remaining sensor life, reduces downtime by providing a “heads-up” on
sensor life
– Dual redundant MODBUS RS485 interface provides remote operation of
all functions
