Culture
The Banyamulenge live in hamlets in areas that
are suited to their livestock
Until the late 70’s, they were semi-nomadic. Their
movement depended on the health of families and
their livestock
Banyamulenge have the talent to sing (indirimbo),
dance (imbyino) and poetry (ibyivugo or ibironda)
Marriage is unique in the Banyamulenge
community and between two families belonging
Alexis Murura Shama
to two different clans.
A cow (inka) is considered as something very
important
We get Milk (amata), meat (inyama) and butter
(amavuta) from the cow
Cows horns (amahembe) were used as water
containers; its skin (uruhu) for clothing and
mats
The cow served as dowry (inkwano) and as
economic source for the family
Traditionally, sheep (intama) was considered as
a peaceful and sacred animal

Christianity and Banyamulenge
God (Imana) is over every things
About 80 % are evangelical or Pentecostal
protestants and 20% Catholic
God (Imana) is only invoked when all other
earthly, spiritual possibilities and other
alternatives things had failed to save a situation.
God (Imana) is an expression to impossibilities
Only God is able to repair the unrepairable, hence
the expression ahasigaye nah’ Imana ….” (only
God knows …) is still

The Bible say in Psalms 146:1-2
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, my soul! I will
praise him as long as I live; I will sing to my God
all my life.
The Kind David has danced for the Lord
2 Samuel 6:14
David, wearing only a linen cloth round his waist,
danced with all his might to honour the Lord
