• Marc Perkins
• Went to college in the LA area
– Harvey Mudd College
• Masters degree in biology from ASU
– Researched insect physiology
• Taught at OCC for 5 years
– Including courses on Rabbit Island
• An island in British Columbia that OCC owns!

Course syllabus
• No separate grade for the lab section
• You must be registered for both lecture and lab
• Missed labs can only be made up the week of the lab
– By attending another lab section
• Contact me (and the other section’s instructor) to schedule this
– For excused absences only
• Since we’re in the lab
– Proper attire is required
– No food and drink in open containers
– We will work in groups

Required Materials
• Lab manual
– 6th edition; earlier editions won’t work
– Available in the bookstore

Grading
• Lab reports
– Due at the beginning of lab the week after the
lab is carried out
• Late reports lose 15%/day late
– Arriving late to class = late report!
– Graded for both completeness (you collected all
the data in lab) as well as thoughtfulness
(correct answers, through answers)
– 10 points per report

Grading, pt. 2
• Quizzes
– 10 points
– ~3-4 questions based on the current week’s lab
• Entirely based on the lab manual
• Will likely be helpful to have filled out the term definitions for
the week’s lab
– ~6-7 questions based on the prior week’s lab
• Based on what we did in lab, and what’s in the lab manual
– The quizzes will start at the beginning of class, and will
be timed
• Hint: don’t be late :)

Schedule
• There will be no quiz at the beginning of next week’s
lab
– All other labs have quizzes
• Field trip to Dana Point tide pools!
– One day on a weekend:
• Saturday, May 5 from 8:30 am – 11:30 am
• Sunday, May 6 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
– You’ll need to arrange your own transportation to the site
– Going on the trip is worth 15 points
• In addition to the normal lab report
• No lab the last week of the semester

• Follow the handout’s instructions
– Log in with your pre-created user ID
• Based on your name and social security number
– A Bio100L section should appear
• Account creation
– If you added by last Saturday, you should have an
account now
– If you are petitioning, you’ll only get an account
after you’ve officially added the course.
• So, add as soon as you can!

change frequently. Note also that you likely didn’t
go the same schools I did.
