1 Cor. 12 :1

Spiritual Gifts Spiritual Gift : A Definition

A SPIRITUAL GIFT is an endowment of motivation and ability , given by the Holy Spirit to every believer, to be used to minister to others and therefore build up the church (Body of Christ).

Spiritual Gifts An Endowment

It is really a supernatural endowment. A gift that cannot be used up - and it is beyond my ability to understand or to explain - it is driven by the Holy Spirit

Spiritual Gifts

Gift’s Motivation An inner desire to serve God in a certain way. I must...replaces I

should…

or I

ought to

Spiritual Gifts

Gift’s Ability A special capacity to serve which originates with the Holy Spirit I get the gift, the motivation and the ability all in the same package.

The Difference between The Fruit of the Spirit from Spiritual Gifts is…

“The fruit of the Spirit reveal Christ’s contribution to our character, while our spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make to God’s kingdom.”

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts

1. Don’t confuse gifts with natural talents Example :

Public speaking is a natural talent or ability, but when another is encouraged through your spoken word, that is a spiritual gift (i.e. exhortation )

Spiritual Gifts

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts

2. Don’t confuse gifts with the Fruit of the Spirit.

Gal.5:22-23 “The Fruit of the Spirit reveal Christ’s contribution to our character, while our spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make to God’s kingdom.”

Spiritual Gifts

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts

3. Don’t confuse gifts with Christian Roles. Examples : Evangelist, Pastor etc. In other words, gifts = functions not office 4. Be aware of the “gift projection” tendency.

(Expecting others to serve the way you do and have similar results.)

Spiritual Gifts

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts

5. Don’t feel your gift makes you in any way superior to others.

1 Cor. 12: 21

6. Realize that using your gifts without love is worthless!

1 Cor. 13: 1-3

Spiritual Gifts

7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts

7. Yours or anyone’s Spiritual Gifts are not confirmed in isolation.

Personal inventory tests alone cannot determine your gifts. Your gifts are confirmed within community. Others within the church must see and recognize your gifts.

Monitoring My Heartbeat

The Bible defines the “Heart” as:

a. “The organ that pumps your blood ” b. “Your emotional constitution or disposition ” c. “The vital force or driving impulse”

“Passion (heart) is the fuel of life. It is the great source of energy and drive. It’s what makes us explore new vistas, develop new relationships, and seek solutions to perplexing problems .”

Monitoring My Heartbeat

My heart determines....

· Why I SAY the things I do · Why I FEEL the way I do · Why I ACT the way I do My heart is the REAL me!

Heart

Monitoring My Heartbeat

Why has God given each person a UNIQUE “heartbeat ?” Because you can do God’s will and serve God’s purpose by letting your heartbeat MOTIVATE you for ministry!

5 Misconceptions About Abilities 1 . MYTH:

People aren’t born with skills. All skills must be learned by experience.

This simply is not true. There are a number of talents which seem to be inborn, or are developed very early in infancy. When people say “He just seems to have a natural talent for it” it’s probably true!

Abilities

5 Misconceptions About Abilities

2. MYTH: Those skills which must be learned, are learned primarily in the classroom.

Actually, some of your most basic skills were learned at home, “in the street”, or somewhere else outside the classroom.

Abilities

5 Misconceptions About Abilities

3. MYTH: If you have certain abilities, you will be very aware that you have them.

Again, this is not true. You are probably using a number of talents or skills that you are not even aware of! You need some process of skill identification.

Abilities

5 Misconceptions About Abilities

4. MYTH: Skills that I use at work are only usable in that environment. I couldn’t use them in D.R. ministry.

Hopefully, by the end of this class, you’ll see the fallacy of this idea. Be creative!

Abilities

5 Misconceptions About Abilities

5. MYTH: Most people only have a very few abilities.

Does anyone really know all of John Scoggins’ abilities? The truth is that many national studies have proven that the average person possesses from five hundred to seven hundred skills!

Personality A Rabbit On The Swim Team

“Once upon a time, the animals decided to do something meaningful to meet the problems of the new world. So they organized a school. The adopted an activity curriculum of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took all the subjects.

The duck was excellent in swimming; in fact, better than his instructor. But he made only passing grades in flying, and he was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to drop swimming and stay after school to practice running. This caused his web feet to be badly worn, so that he was only average in swimming. But average was quite acceptable, so nobody worried about that- except the duck.

The rabbit started at the top of his class in running, but developed a nervous twitch in his leg muscles because of so much make-up work in swimming.

Personality

The squirrel was excellent in climbing, but he encountered constant frustration in flying class because his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the treetop down. He developed Charlie horses from overexertion, and so only got a C in climbing and a D in running.

The eagle was a problem child and was severely disciplined for being a non-conformist. In climbing trees he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there.”

Personality Development

 The study of human behavior was first developed by the Greek Scholar Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, around 400 BC. He identified four body fluids that he believed determined a person’s behavior.

 In A.D. 149 a Roman physiologist by the name of Galen proposed a temperament theory that built on Hippocrates observations. His four temperaments:

“CHOLERIC”: “SANGUINE”: extroverted/task-oriented type, extroverted/people-oriented type, “PHLEGMATIC”: “MELANCHOLY”: introverted/people-oriented type, introverted/task-oriented type.

Most human behavioral scientists either agree with Hippocrates & Galen or have only tweaked his basic findings slightly (sometimes only by changing the terminology)

 In 1928, William Marston, a psychologist authored “The Emotions of Normal People,” which introduced the

 In 1977, John G. Geier & Dorothy E. Downey developed the “Performax Personal Profile System,” which was a personal assessment used by business & industry, & based on Marston’s

Success at work & ministry depends a lot on your people skills.

Personality

People Skills Are Important By learning more about your behavior & that of others, you greatly improve good relationships

In Disaster Relief Ministry, there is a great need for people who can relate well to others.

  

No one is outstanding at everything, you need others to supplement your weaknesses with their strengths.

When two different people don’t get along, it is usually a problem of inflexibility. No one wants to move out of their comfort zone.

Some people believe everyone thinks and makes decisions just as they do. The Bible is very clear that God has made each of us unique .

Personality

People Skills Are Important

   By understanding the unique way God has made you, you can learn to

love

people and appreciate their differences.

God made each of us “different,”, not worse than others, not better… but

different

. These differences often cause difficulties in relationships.

The Bible is also very clear that Christians are to love & care for other people.

Jesus described the mark of a true disciple like this… “By this all men will know you are my disciples, If you love one another.” John 13:35

Look for the uniqueness that God created in you - you are a priceless treasure. Why did you listen to those who demeaned you…and far worse, why did you believe them ? No longer hide your rarity in the dark. Bring it forth. In one sense, we should not need to imitate others and be comfortable to be ourselves, however… Paul once said: “

Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.”

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Ministry

Ministry is the heart of the Christian life. (Mat. 20:28)  God has uniquely shaped each individual for specific ministries.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Ministry

God has given all his children a SHAPE that can be developed and used in ministry. Everyone is a “10” in some area. Everyone has something to offer. Developing and using your SHAPE and that of your crew is an act of good stewardship and of service.

The evidence of the right match between my “SHAPE” and my Disaster Relief ministry is : fulfillment and results.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About The Body of Christ!

Disaster Relief, like the church, is to operate on the basis of spiritual gifts, rather than elected office. We do not elect people to positions. “A man’s

gift makes room for him...”

Proverbs 18 :16

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About The Body of Christ!

Disaster Relief, like the church is a family , not a business; an organism, not an organization. Therefore we streamline the structure in order to maximize ministry and minimize maintenance. We do not bury ministries under procedures.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About The Body of Christ!

The greater good of the whole Body must always take priority over the needs of any single ministry. There is no place for “turfism” in God’s Family. Disaster Relief Ministry needs to be a part of your church’s overall strategy to make Christ famous.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About The Role Of Blue Hats !

The objective is to mobilize and equip an army of servants who are maximizing their unique gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences in a meaningful place of service through Disaster Relief.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Accountability!

Everything in D.R. or Church Ministry rises or falls on leadership. No ministry can exceed the commitment of those leading it.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Training!

Every D.R. leader and servant is a learner . The moment you stop learning, you stop leading.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Diversity of Ministry!

Just as there are seasons of Disaster, there are seasons in D.R. Ministry. If an area of service isn’t fulfilling anymore, move to a place where it is. There are no sacred cows and many places to serve!

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Diversity of Ministry!

Your primary ministry commitment should be in the area where you are gifted. Your secondary ministry includes serving in any other area of the Body where you are needed.

S.H.A.P.E.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values

About Performance!

We expect excellence in Disaster Relief ministry, not perfection. Excellence is doing your best. God deserves our best.

Congratulations!
