How many credits to schedule?
Have I considered what other things are going to require my time?
6 credits: 1 study hall each
semester
6.5 credits: 1 study hall
either semester
7 credits: no study halls
*GBAPS states that “a student must
carry at least 6 credits a year.”
Do I need to be in school all day?
Yes, according to Wisconsin Statute
118.33(1) (b) “…A school board may not
grant a high school diploma to any
student unless, during the high school
grades, the pupil has been enrolled in a
class or has participated in an activity
approved by the school board during
each class period of each day.”
Should I Retake a Course?
If you earned a “D” or
“F” in a class, the
course can be retaken.
New grade will replace
the lower one.
NOTE: The exception is math.
Consider summer
school for this purpose
Science
Chemistry is required before
taking AP Chemistry
Physics is not required before
taking AP Physics, however,
recommended concurrent math
is Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus
You must have a C or better in
Biology and Chemistry before
taking Gen. Anatomy and
Physiology at East High School
Physics is
required for
some majors at
UM-Twin Cities.
Be sure to check
with admissions.
Health Career Requirements for College:
Students planning to pursue a nursing degree generally
need CNA certification prior to attending college
Students entering some health-related occupations,
including programs at technical colleges, will need
Chemistry for admission (example: Nursing)
English Language Arts
Most seniors will still need 1 credit of English
If four college bound – recommend:
Expository Writing (.5) and
a Reading course (Novel, Science Fiction & Fantasy (.5) and/or
Speech (.5)
Communication Applications is NOT for 4-year college bound
AP Lit & Comp follows AP Lang & Comp
Check with college(s) to ensure courses are accepted for language
arts credit
Talk to your current teacher for their recommendation
Math
Most four year colleges require completion of
Algebra II before graduation
A fourth year of math is preferred to keep skills
sharp and prepare students for college math
placement tests
Competitive colleges look for a fourth year of math
CEP College Math and Math with Business
Applications allow transcripted credit at NWTC
Talk to your math teacher for their recommendation
Social Studies
If you earn a B in Psychology and/or
Sociology, you can have the course waived at
NWTC if required for your program
Don’t need Psychology before AP
Psychology
Electives such as Modern Issues, Intro to
Law, etc. are considered college-prep
electives
World/Foreign Language—
Do I need it?
Some colleges require 2
years but prefer 3 or 4.
If a college does not
require foreign
language for admission,
it may be required for
college graduation.
Technical colleges do
not require a foreign
language.
Note: Being proficient
in another language
may be very useful in
any career.
Do I need more Physical
Education?
PE 12 is an elective
credit. Student must
have fulfilled 1.5 PE
credits to be eligible!
Other PE choices can
be taken twice (except
PE 9).
Advanced Placement
Courses
Can earn college credit(s) at 90% of colleges by
scoring 3, 4, or 5 on test in May
$89 fee per test (waiver available)
Rigorous curriculum
Teacher recommendation needed
Note: The ideal AP candidate is very motivated (A’s
and B’s) and understands there will be considerable
reading and writing homework.
