Have I considered what other things are going to require my time? 6 credits: 1 study hall each semester 6.5 credits: 1 study hall either semester 7 credits: no study halls *GBAPS states that “a student must carry at least 6 credits a year.” Do I need to be in school all day? Yes, according to Wisconsin Statute 118.33(1) (b) “…A school board may not grant a high school diploma to any student unless, during the high school grades, the pupil has been enrolled in a class or has participated in an activity approved by the school board during each class period of each day.” Should I Retake a Course? If you earned a “D” or “F” in a class, the course can be retaken. New grade will replace the lower one. NOTE: The exception is math. Consider summer school for this purpose Science Chemistry is required before taking AP Chemistry Physics is not required before taking AP Physics, however, recommended concurrent math is Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus You must have a C or better in Biology and Chemistry before taking Gen. Anatomy and Physiology at East High School Physics is required for some majors at UM-Twin Cities. Be sure to check with admissions. Health Career Requirements for College: Students planning to pursue a nursing degree generally need CNA certification prior to attending college Students entering some health-related occupations, including programs at technical colleges, will need Chemistry for admission (example: Nursing) English Language Arts Most seniors will still need 1 credit of English If four college bound – recommend: Expository Writing (.5) and a Reading course (Novel, Science Fiction & Fantasy (.5) and/or Speech (.5) Communication Applications is NOT for 4-year college bound AP Lit & Comp follows AP Lang & Comp Check with college(s) to ensure courses are accepted for language arts credit Talk to your current teacher for their recommendation Math Most four year colleges require completion of Algebra II before graduation A fourth year of math is preferred to keep skills sharp and prepare students for college math placement tests Competitive colleges look for a fourth year of math CEP College Math and Math with Business Applications allow transcripted credit at NWTC Talk to your math teacher for their recommendation Social Studies If you earn a B in Psychology and/or Sociology, you can have the course waived at NWTC if required for your program Don’t need Psychology before AP Psychology Electives such as Modern Issues, Intro to Law, etc. are considered college-prep electives World/Foreign Language— Do I need it? Some colleges require 2 years but prefer 3 or 4. If a college does not require foreign language for admission, it may be required for college graduation. Technical colleges do not require a foreign language. Note: Being proficient in another language may be very useful in any career. Do I need more Physical Education? PE 12 is an elective credit. Student must have fulfilled 1.5 PE credits to be eligible! Other PE choices can be taken twice (except PE 9). Advanced Placement Courses Can earn college credit(s) at 90% of colleges by scoring 3, 4, or 5 on test in May $89 fee per test (waiver available) Rigorous curriculum Teacher recommendation needed Note: The ideal AP candidate is very motivated (A’s and B’s) and understands there will be considerable reading and writing homework. What are the new classes or name changes for next year? 1) Microsoft Office- replaces Advanced Office Can’t take if you already took Advanced Office Option of taking for grade at NWTC (CEP) 2) Principles of Business 3) Entrepreneurship ***Business Law, Business Leadership, and International Business concepts are being integrated into these two new classes. Can take Principles of Business and/or Entrepreneurship if you already took some of these courses previously. What other things do I need to know? Zero Hour (6:30 AM) classes: Chemistry Language Arts 11 Personal Fitness Biology Advanced Biology Personal Financial Literacy Mark correct box on Course Request sheet for “Preble Period 0.” Would Youth Options be a good choice? Opportunity to earn college credit at technical college or university Must be a course not offered within GBAPS Focused on career pathway To qualify, must be in good standing for graduation credits. Apply October or February for the upcoming semester. See your counselor. Concurrent Enrollment Program Courses (CEP) College-level courses taught in GBAPS high schools. If approved, grades go on high school transcript AND official college transcript. Application Deadline: March 1, 2013 (10-day grace period for choosing college credit at start of course) **Some courses require two teacher recommendations and personal statement** Tuition: Free for NWTC courses, Reduced for UWGB and St. Norbert College (around $180 for 3 credits) Must report grades when applying to college as a senior Certified Co-operative Learning (CO-OP) 2.5 GPA Prerequisite: class in the chosen Co-op area Good attendance Complete forms in a timely manner Attend Co-op meeting Elective credit for working and a paycheck Real world experience What if I want to take a class at another high school?
