Some facts and figures about TfL’s services during the Games are provided
below:
London Underground (LUL): During the Olympics, over 62 million journeys were
made on the Tube - up 35 per cent on normal levels. Tuesday 7 August was
the busiest day in the Tube’s history, with 4.57 million passengers.
Docklands Light Railway (DLR): Nearly 6.9 million journeys were made over the
Olympics - up by over 100 per cent on normal levels. Over 500,000 journeys
on a single day were made for the first time on Friday 3 August.
London Overground (LO): Over 6.3 million journeys were made during the
Olympics - up 57 per cent on normal levels.
Similar figures are currently being collated for the Paralympic Games.

Londoners listened to advice and travelled sensiblyresearch indicates that
36% of Londoners made changes to their regular journeys during the
Olympic Games period.
Patterns of freight and servicing were also adapted to take account of Games
time travel conditions.
Traffic in central London was typically down by around 15 per cent during
the Olympics and by 5-10 per cent during the Paralympics
Reduce was the most popular of the 4R’s (15%) with re-time the next most
popular (9%). (reroute to avoid busy areas and revise mode the other two)
Summary findings on travel demand
during summer 2012…
Much of the credit for this behaviour change goes to London’s businesses,
thousands of whom have enabled and encouraged different travel by their staff,
their suppliers and their customers.
London’s transport network can accommodate more people than previously
thought possible.
Simple changes such as spreading the peak times of travel and switching
from public transport to walking for some shorter journeys enabled the
capacity of the transport system to be used more efficiently.
TfL is committed to learning the lessons of the London 2012 Games. Online
survey recently circulated. Results to be presented at a ‘thank you’ event in
November, opportunity also to shape TfL’s future work in this area.
