Come on in and find a seat

WELCOME!

Mrs. Douglass Earth/Space Science

I am looking forward to a great year

My goal is that all students will succeed

This semester you will be studying

Geology

Astronomy

Meteorology

Materials Needed:

 A spiral notebook for taking notes(optional but recommended)  Folder for returned work   3x5 index cards Highlighter  Calculator by the third day of school!

Notebook

  All notes and returned work should be kept in a notebook or in the file folders in the room A brief review (5 minutes or so) every day in seminar is the best way to make sure the information sinks in • Cramming is not an effective way of studying. I want you to know the information well enough that you can apply it to everyday life

Homework

  

You will have some homework This will consist of reading a text assignment and completing a reading worksheet You should also review your notes and reading on a regular basis

Excellent Study Technique

   

Every night take 5 minutes or so to reread your notes After reading the notes make a checkmark at the bottom of the page each night you review When you find yourself not even having to read the info make a star This can be used with your book (minus the checkmarks & stars)

Handing in Work

   

Work is due at the end of the class period unless otherwise noted Homework is due at the beginning of the block • • Work turned in late in class will be 10% off Work turned in late after class can receive only 50% credit After two weeks it is not worth any credit Do all work in pencil

Group Work

   

There will be opportunities to work in a group.

Groups may work together if everyone is working.

All members should contribute Copying one person's work is not considered group work • Cheating is not tolerated. You will receive a zero on the paper and receive a detention or office referral

.

Corrections

Papers may be corrected and turned in with “corrected” marked at the top • Do not erase the incorrect answers • The correct answers should be in the adjacent area in a different color than the original • • Correct answers receive 1/2 credit. I will not regrade if you put the answers in the original blanks.

Keep Work

  

Keep track of your papers.

• If I have to replace a paper 10% will be deducted from the grade.

Keep returned papers. • I want you to get the grade you deserve. By keeping all papers, if there is ever a question about a paper it will be easy to prove you have done the assignment. This is for your protection.

Makeup work for unplanned absences

    

It is your responsibility to come school before to get your assignments.

or after I will not interrupt class to give you work you are to pick up before school the first day you are back!

You never gave me the paper is not an excuse for not doing your work. You have one day of makeup time for each day you are absent. However, if you are gone the day an assignment is due, about which you have previous notice, it is due the day you return.

Example

   

You miss class Monday You are back in school Tuesday and come by before school to pick up your missed work You work on it in seminar and if you have any questions come in for help during seminar or after school It is due Wednesday in class

Bad Example

   

You are gone Monday You ask for it in class Wednesday I will not give it to you unless I have time and will deduct 10% for your not following directions and interrupting class Or, You pick it up after school Wednesday and it is turned in late on Friday for ½ credit

Missed Tests

Missed tests must be taken within a week. It is your responsibility to make sure to schedule a time to come in and take the test. I will not remind you. After a week, the test is only worth 1/2 credit.

Test retakes

 

Most tests may be retaken to raise your score.

• () The two scores will be averaged together.

• The retake must be taken within a week following the test.

Planned Absences

Note: If you are going to be gone for an activity planned absence in and get your work or other it is your responsibility to come ahead of time . It is easy to get behind.

Makeup work

   

Makeup work

  

Failure to pick up work before school the first day back counts against you for the floating A Ns—no show will be marked on the paper and lets me know that you did not follow the proper procedure and that the paper is due before the next class If you interrupt class to get your work 10% can be taken off

Makeup work

Extra Credit

 

You may bring in current news that deal with Earth Science You may write up a short review of an Earth Science related show you saw on television

Note: you may not have any missing papers to receive extra credit

Other extra credit facts

    

Pop tabs (5 tabs=1point) Kleenex boxes=25 points Extra credit may not raise your grade more than 3% May not be earned if you have any missing papers May not be used to raise an F

Failure

The biggest danger of failing comes if you do not turn in your work

Floating A

Anyone with no more than one

warning, tardy, or late paper and no missing papers may have their lowest grade dropped

Remember that part of the discipline plan is coming to class unprepared

Don’t come unprepared

Don’t blow your floating A by coming to class unprepared.

• • You must bring your book, paper, pencil and any other required materials every day or it will count against your floating A Remember to be in your seat the bell rings or you are tardy when

Classroom Guidelines

I like to have a relaxed yet respectful atmosphere in my classroom. These are the basic guidelines for conduct to help achieve that goal.

Classroom Re entry

  

Come in and take your seat.

Get out your book, pencil and any homework you have to be turned in.

When the bell rings you must be in your seat and stop talking

Respect others by:

• • • • • Leaving other’s property alone No putdowns Speak one at a time Never teasing with a classroom pet Wash your hands (and desk when applicable) after handling a classroom pet • This would include . . . .

The Key word is . . .

Respect me by:

  

Being in your seats, sitting quietly, when the bell rings Getting out your book, homework, etc when you get to the classroom Remain seated unless you have permission to be up—that includes until the final bell

    

Come to class prepared with all materials: book, Science notebook, pencil, completed homework Follow directions Lab equipment is off limits except during lab activities Please push in your seats and make sure you have picked up all materials and trash Stay at your seats until after the bell rings • (I like to talk to you all and get to know you when there is free time)

Electronic Equipment

  

Cell phones may not be used during class • No texting • Giving or receiving of phone calls Music • IPods and MP3 players may be used only at appropriate times when you maintain a B average Earplugs are never am talking to you to be in when I

Consequences

   

The first time a student chooses to ignore the guidelines they will be warned.

The second time, they will serve a 15 minute detention.

The third time, a 30-minute detention.

The next time, there will be an office referral. Note: Repeated disruptive behavior over a period of time can result in a drop down in consequences

Failure to Report • • • • Failure to report for a detention at the arranged time (you will have your choice of that day or the next) results in a doubling of the time. If you fail to report for that detention I will write an office referral and they can handle it. Remember the minimum office detention is two hours.

Severe clause: Any use of obscene language or gestures, fighting, cheating, or direct defiance will lead to an immediate office referral.

The Pets

We have two snakes Wallis— Columbian boa Edith—ball python

A Leopard Gecko
