Similitude
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things
were written aforetime were written
for our learning, that we through
patience and comfort of the scriptures
might have hope.
Similitude's
Hosea 12:10 I have also spoken by the
prophets, and I have multiplied
visions, and used similitudes, by the
ministry of the prophets.
And He Appeared
Genesis 18:1-3 1 And the LORD appeared unto
him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent
door in the heat of the day; 2 And he lift up his
eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him:
and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from
the tent door, and bowed himself toward the
ground, 3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found
favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee,
from thy servant:
Sarah’s Laughter
Genesis 18:12-15 12 Therefore Sarah laughed
within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall
I have pleasure, my lord being old also? 13 And
the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did
Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a
child, which am old? 14 Is any thing too hard for
the LORD? At the time appointed I will return
unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah
shall have a son. 15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I
laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay;
but thou didst laugh.
At the Appointed Time
Genesis 18:14 Is any
thing too hard for the
LORD? At the time
appointed I will return
unto thee, according to
the time of life, and
Sarah shall have a son.
The Messiah in Sodom
Genesis 18:20-21 20 And
the LORD said, Because
the cry of Sodom and
Gomorrah is great, and
because their sin is very
grievous; 21 I will go
down now, and see
whether they have done
altogether according to
the cry of it, which is
come unto me; and if
not, I will know.
Seed From Another Place
Genesis 19:32
Come, let us
make our father
drink wine, and
we will lie with
him, that we
may preserve
seed of our
father.
Miraculous Birth
Genesis 21:1-2 1 And the
LORD visited Sarah as
he had said, and the
LORD did unto Sarah as
he had spoken. 2 For
Sarah conceived, and
bare Abraham a son in
his old age, at the set
time of which God had
spoken to him.
Binding of Isaac - Akedah
The Akedah is perhaps the most startling example
of a “type” in the Bible.
It is the famed incident of Abraham offering his
son Isaac in Genesis chapter 22.
Macrocode: It sets up for an anticipatory event or
action that will occur in the future.
Figures of Spech
Simile: Resemblance Gen 25:25; Matt 7:24-27
Allegory: Comparison by representation
Gen 49:9; Gal 4:22, 24
Metaphor: Representation Matt 26:26
Hypo catastasis: an implied resemblance or
representation
Matt 7:3-5; Matt 15:13
Type: A figure or example of something future
Rom 5:14; Gen 22, 24
Analogy: resemblance in some particulars
between things otherwise unlike
Cosmic Codes, Appendix A
The Binding of Isaac
Genesis 22:1-2 1 And it came to pass after these
things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said
unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I
am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only
son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the
land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt
offering upon one of the mountains which I will
tell thee of.
The Binding of Isaac
Law of First Mention – The first occurrence of a
word in the Scripture is usually very significant in
the overall design.
It seems profoundly significant that this account
includes the first occurrence of the word love in
the Scripture.
God did tempt Abraham
James 1:12-14 12 Blessed is the man that
endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he
shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord
hath promised to them that love him. 13 Let no
man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of
God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither
tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is
tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust,
and enticed.
Hebrews 11:17-19
Hebrews 11:17-19 17 By faith Abraham, when he
was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had
received the promises offered up his only begotten
son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall
thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was
able to raise him up, even from the dead; from
whence also he received him in a figure.
After These Things
• This phrase is generally used as an adverb or
conjunction.
• After the things from chapters 11 through 21, more
specifically after the birth of Isaac in Chapter 21.
• “After these things” is the Hebrew way of saying
“eventually”. It describes an undefined period of
time having passed; but usually it is a substantial
amount of time.
Burnt Offering
Hebrew olah; i.e., “ascending,” the whole being
consumed by fire, and regarded as ascending to God
while being consumed. Part of every offering was
burnt in the sacred fire, but this was wholly burnt, a
“whole burnt offering.”
It was the most frequent form of sacrifice, and
apparently the only one mentioned in the book of
Genesis.
1. Abel
(Gen. 4:3, 4)
2. Noah
(Gen. 8:20)
3. Abraham
(Gen. 22:2, 7, 8, 13)
4. Hebrews in Egypt (Ex. 10:25)
God Tests Abraham
• We’re told this, but Abraham
didn’t know it!
• We know from the first verse
that Isaac will survive
• God’s demand on Abraham
came in a dream at night
• He is to offer Isaac as an
‘Olah … a burnt offering
• 5 kinds of sacrificial burnt
offerings with different
purposes and names
• Offerings distinguished by:
1. What is offered
2. Purpose and function
A 50 Mile Journey
• Abraham took 2
servants with him
• Took wood for the altar
fire with him
• No reason for Abraham
to take wood, as there
was plenty of wood in
the hills of Jerusalem
• Isaac carrying the wood
is a perfect parallel of
Jesus carrying his own
cross

“The place of a skull”
Two thousand years later – on this very spot –
another Father would offer His Son as the
offering for all time.
thine only son Isaac
• This is the first mention of “only son”
• Isaac was the only son of promise
• The only son of Sarah, and the only one here
• Ishmael left some years before (Genesis 21:9-10).
• His other sons were not yet born (Genesis 25:1-6).
Land of Moriah
• Moriah = “the manifestation of God”
• Area referred to today as the Temple Mount in
Jerusalem
• Mt. Moriah was located in Jerusalem, where
Solomon built the temple.
Land of Moriah
2 Chronicles 3:1 Then Solomon began to
build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in
mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared
unto David his father, in the place that David
had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan
the Jebusite.
The Akedah
• Means “binding”
• God instructed Abraham
to release his much-loved
son Ishmael
• Rescued by “angel of
Yahweh”
• Now, Isaac is to be
removed from Abraham
• Rescued by “angel of
Yahweh”
• Both were considered
“firstborn” sons by
Abraham
Rose up early in the morning
• There is no delay he starts his journey the
very next morning.
• This event shows an immediate response
and the obedience of Abraham.
• There are four people going on this journey,
Abraham, Isaac, and two young men.
• One of the young men was most likely
Eleazer, Abraham’s trusted servant.
The Third Day
Genesis 22:4-5 4
Then on the third day
Abraham lifted up his
eyes, and saw the
place afar off. 5 And
Abraham said unto
his young men, Abide
ye here with the ass;
and I and the lad will
go yonder and
worship, and come
again to you.
The Third Day
on the third day
• Interesting phrase and time period used
many times in the bible.
• Gen 40:20; Ex 19:16; Esther 5:1; Hosea
6:2; John 2:1;
• Gospel accounts of Jesus rising from the
grave.
Afar Off
Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw
the place afar off
• afar = rachowq (raw-khoke) H7350
Remote, of place or time.
• Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw two thousand
years into the future to see God providing himself
as a lamb.
• John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my
day: and he saw it, and was glad.
Was it a stall?
I and the lad will go yonder and worship,
and come again to you
Abraham believed that He and Isaac would both return
to the young men.
Abraham knew of the resurrection and believed that
Isaac would return with him, perhaps in a resurrected
state.
Abraham knew that God had promised that his future
generations would be through Isaac. In the eyes of
Abraham if God wanted him to sacrifice Isaac then
Abraham did not have a problem – God had a problem.
Carried the Wood
Genesis 22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the
burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he
took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went
both of them together.
Wood, Fire, and Knife
Isaac was to carry the wood on which he was to be sacrificed
as Christ was to carry His own cross on which He was to be
sacrificed.
Isaac was about 30 - 37 years old at this time.
Fire symbolizes judgment
Knife symbolizes the execution of judgment and of sacrifice
An emphasis - two men went up the hill
Isaac shows a loving submission and goes willingly obeying
his father.
They went in agreement - together
The Lamb
where is the lamb for a burnt offering
The answer to this question is very prophetic. Abraham
may have known that he was acting out a profound
future event, vs. 14.
My son, God will provide himself a lamb
for a burnt offering:
What will God provide for the offering?
Himself – as the lamb,
His first public introduction was by John the Baptist.
“Father Where Is The Lamb?”
• Isaac was somewhere
between 25 – 37 years old
• Would not have seemed all
that strange to Abraham,
human sacrifice was normal
among the pagans
• Isaac did not resist or
demand his rights
• Parallels with the Messiah
going silently to the Cross
• Isaac was no Messiah
• The appointed time for a
Messiah had not yet come
Angel of Yahweh Rescues Isaac
• “Angel of the Lord” stops
the sacrifice, and then
embellishes the already
given covenants
• “I have sworn by Myself”
• Genealogy of Nahor is
given
• 12 sons for Nahor, just as
12 sons for Ishmael And for
Jacob (Israel)
Ten Double-Callings of Names
1. Abraham, Abraham

Achar = Another
Genesis 22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes,
and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught
in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and
took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt
offering in the stead of his son.
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and
behold another a ram caught in a thicket by his
horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and
offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of
his son.
Substitute Ram
Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold
behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns:
God does more than provide a lamb, He would Himself
become the lamb two thousand years later on this spot.
This is why there was a ram in the thicket and not a lamb,
the ram is a substitution.
Prophecy
Abraham called the name of that place
Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day,
In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Abraham saw the place afar off in time and saw God
offer Himself for mankind. He knew that he was acting
out prophecy and named the place accordingly.
The Signature
Mount Moriah was the greatest trial in
Abraham’s life
Mount Moriah was also the greatest
triumph in Abraham’s life.
The Signature
Abraham returned unto his young men, and
they rose up and went together to Beersheba
Where is Isaac?
The Signature
• Naturally, we infer that Isaac also joined them and that
there were four who traveled back to Beersheba.
• However the person Isaac has been edited out of the
record, by the Holy Spirit, from the time he is offered
on the mount until he is united with his bride, two
chapters later.
• Christ is taken away from the earth after he was
sacrificed for our sins however will be united with his
bride two days later!
(Hosea 6:2) After two days will he revive us: in the
third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his
sight.
The Signature
A wonderful
prophetic story
looking forward
to the Messiah
