Ranking
• I found a power point presentation created
by a teacher friend of mine, Kathy
Underhill.
• She and I worked together in Puyallup, but
now she teaches in Kent and I teach here.
• We are going to use her lesson to learn
and practice the ASL concept of Ranking.
Ranking
Kathy Underhill
Ranking
“Ranking” is a listing principle that
is often used in ASL. Ranking is
used to show lists of various
people, places, things, or events.
Kathy Underhill
Ranking
Use your Non-Dominant Hand to display
the number of nouns (but held sideways).
Example: Use a ‘3’ hand to list/rank three things
Dominant hand (1 handshape) is then used
to reference the various nouns (persons,
places, things, events).
Kathy Underhill
Ranking
…is used for: Examples:
• Listing activities (usually chronologically)
 YESTERDAY ME (rank 3) GO STORE, STUDY
FOR TEST, WATCH #TV.
• Listing items (no particular order)
 R-E-C-I-P-E YOU NEED (rank 4) ORANGE,
APPLE, BANANA, STRAWBERRY.
• Siblings (in order of birth)
 BROTHER I HAVE 2 (rank 2) M-I-K-E, M-A-R-C
Kathy Underhill
Ranking begins on the following fingers of your non-dominant
hand:
How many
Starting finger
2 = index finger
3 = thumb
4 = index finger
5 = thumb
6+ = thumb
HINT
Always start with your thumb
except for the number 2 and 4.
Use your dominant index finger to begin signing
your list starting with the appropriate beginning
finger as listed above.
Kathy Underhill
Which finger to start?
Easy way to remember:
Always start with your thumb except for the
number 2 and 4.
Ranking…
Once you refer to a certain
person (or thing), you can drop
the non-dominant hand and
give additional information.
Often the signer will sign onehanded while maintaining the
list/rank on the non-dominant hand.

Using Shoulder-Shifting
Shoulder-Shifting is a feature unique to American
Sign Language.
Related to the concept of deixis in which the
index finger points to a person or object which
may or may not be visible,
shoulders-shifting is a way to distinguish several
pieces of information in a signed sentence
by slightly moving your head and shoulders in a
different direction for each detail.

Shoulder-Shifting is used for:
Contrasting: Multiple topics or pieces of
information in the same sentences;
Comparing: What more than one person
says or does;
Separating: More than one idea or concept
in the same sentence.

The Listing & Order Technique
DVD
Making a visual list of information such as names or ages is
called the Listing and Ordering Technique. (Ranking)
This technique is used most often when providing several
details about one or more person or thing.
The non-dominate hand forms a list with each new bit of
information signed by the dominate hand.
(See pictures top of pg. 138)

I Want to Know…
How do I fix mistakes?
Mistakes are guaranteed to happen, whether you
are fluent in a language or not.
Knowing how to correct mistakes is an important
part of using language well.
ASL has several ways to help correct mistakes:
the most common corrections are oops and
wave-no.
When you make a mistake, use either sign and
continue signing.
You don’t need to over-emphasize the signs or
exaggerate facial expressions.
MASL p 150
I Want to Know…
How do I fix mistakes?
The sign um shows one is thinking of what to say
or trying to remember something.
It is also a visual cue to inform those watching
the conversation that the signer isn’t done.
Wave-no has several uses in ASL: it draws
attention to a mistake and also serves as a
‘stronger’ no than the sign no.
• use wave-no to correct information (“No, I’m
not from California.”),
• to refuse something (“No, I don’t want that.”)
• or to signal an objection (“No you’re wrong.”)

My Family
“My Family” by Iva
Iva signs a narrative about getting pregnant with
her first child and feeling pretty certain the baby
will be Deaf because of the generations of family
members being deaf on her side.
When she gave birth to a daughter, she was
surprised the baby was hearing. She then realized
it was her husband.
This story is based on the life of Mary Hill Telfors.
Iva assumes her character and tells the story in the first person.

• (Do not include parents.)
Use Contrastive Structure to:
• compare any two people in your family.
• to give simple comparisons on physical descriptions,
• simple comparisons on basic personality,
• to tell about their likes and dislikes.
• (This can be parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.)
Watch out!
• Be sure to shoulder shift back and forth when using C.S.
DO NOT list all on one side then list all on the other side!
