Definition of American Sign Language
 ASL is: an organic visual-gestural
language with its own grammar and
syntax that is separate and distinct from
English. It is the primary language of
Deaf adults throughout North America.

 Parameters: characteristics that combine
to form each unique sign.
 Also known as:
 The Stokoe System
 Phonemes of ASL

 Handshape: over 45 different finger configurations
 Palm Orientation: the direction your hand is facing
 Location: placement in relation to the signer’s body
 Movement: varying direction or repetition can
communicate action or description
 Facial Expression: some signs require non-manual
signals to show their full meaning
