2010 Funding to Hispanic
Serving Institutions (HSIs)
In 2010 the Department of Energy provided $38.56 million in
support to Hispanic Serving Institutions in the form of research and
development opportunities, scholarships, internships and training.
Large scale projects included:
• $3.15 million for the Department of Energy – Florida
International University Science and Technology Workforce
Development Initiative developed by the Office of
Environmental Management designed to create a pipeline of
minority engineers specifically trained and mentored to enter
the Department of Energy’s workforce in technical areas of
need.
• $7.82 million to the University of New Mexico to further the
institution’s STEM related research and developments efforts.

Used Energy-Related Laboratory
Equipment (ERLE) Grant Program
• Established to assist nonprofit educational institutions of higher
learning located in the United States in equipping their science
and engineering laboratories with used energy-related laboratory
equipment for energy-related research and/or instructional
purposes in the life, physical, and environmental sciences and
engineering.
• Eligible institutions submit an equipment proposal request to the
DOE field organization where the equipment is located, stating the
objective to be met through use of the equipment. If the proposals
are accepted, equipment grants are issued to the institutions.

Office of Energy Efficiency and
Renewable Energy
Minority Undergraduate Research Associate (MURA) Program
• Research program that encourages minority students to pursue
careers in science and technology.
• Research associates engage in solar energy research projects,
thereby contributing to the development of cost-competitive,
market-applicable technologies.
• Participants encouraged to participate in renewable energyrelated summer internships.
• Successful in retention of minority students in the science and
technology areas and helps many students reach their
educational and career goals.
• 2010 participating institutions of higher education include:
University of New Mexico, University of Texas- Pan American
and University of Texas- El Paso.
