Installing Windows Server 2008 Installing Server 08 Clean – recommended. You will start from scratch no previous settings or software brought over. Upgrade – used to upgrade from previous versions of Server OS. Will bring forward settings, software, and any other configurations. *THESE ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK. Can also perform a repair. Performing Initial Configuration Tasks Screen that comes up on freshly installed Server Systems. Used to configure very basic configuration tasks, such as setting time zone, password, and Automatic Updates. Configuring Basic Network Settings Allows you to setup a static or automatic IP addressing Static is recommended if the server is going to host some type of service such as DHCP or DNS. You can also set up Internet Connetion Sharing(ICS). ICS turns your Server into a router so that you can share you internet connection. You must have 2 network cards. Configuring Windows Firewall Firewall is on by default. Need to set exceptions for services that are running. Network Locations – Public, or Private Public – turns off network discovery Private – turns on network discovery Can modify this in the network and sharing center. Configuring Server Roles Using the Server Role feature allows you to install a service/duty that a server will host. Only during this install will executable and .dll files be installed. Choosing to install a Role will start a wizard. Can also be used to remove a Role if its already installed. Adding Server 08 Features Features are specific tools that you can install on your Server 08 system. IE: Remote Administration, Server Backup, Wireless Networking Configuring Storage Basic Disks Vs. Dynamic Disks Types of Dynamic Volumes Simple – uses space on 1 disk Spanned – combines multiple disk to look like 1. Striped – RAID-O, Speed, no fault tolerance Mirrored – RAID-1, Fault tolerant, lose half of space RAID-5 – fault tolerant, speed. Lose 33% of space Installing Server Core Installs only the services required for a specific function. Smaller footprint, uses less resources, more secure Command line based Not a separate product, but an installation option Show server core Configuring Windows Activation Multiple Activation Key (MAK) – used for a one-time activation with Microsoft’s hosted activation service or the Volume Activation Management Tool. The MAK can be used a certain number of times that is defined by your agreement with Microsoft. Key Management Service (KMS) – allows you to host an activation service. Only need to activate your KMS host once. Hosts will “check in” every 7 days and required to connect at least once every 180 days to remain active. You Learned The Windows Server 2008 distribution media contains a bootable system that can be used for a standalone software installation or to repair an existing installation. Windows Server 2008 will be installed on a single partition specified at the start of the installation process. Lesson 2 You Learned (cont.) Initial configuration tasks must be performed after the Windows Server 2008 software is installed to finish preparing it for use. These tasks include setting system parameters and passwords, adding server roles, adding server features, and setting up Windows Firewall. Lesson 2 You Learned (cont.) Network addressing is fundamental to successful communication between systems. DNS provides name resolution to allow meaningful names to be used to refer to network addresses. Lesson 2 You Learned (cont.) Windows Server 2008 allows you to configure various types of storage including RAID-0, RAID-1, and RAID-5 storage arrays. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 use activation technology to help combat piracy of Microsoft software. Lesson 2
