Everyone Faces Risk
Risk Analysis
Division
—
Risk MAP
 Every place faces risk
from various threats
• Economic threats
• Health threats
• Natural hazards
 The difference is how
communities manage
this risk.

Everyone Manages Risk
Risk Analysis
Division
—
Risk MAP
 Manage economic risk by
diversifying and inviting new
business.
 Manage threats through
initiatives and regulations.
 Perform tests and do
research
 But what about the threats
from natural hazards?

Levees and Risk
Risk Analysis
Division
—
Risk MAP
 Decisions and actions of a few can lead to risk
being changed significantly for many
 Regardless of best efforts, big floods can
overwhelm levees and the people that operate
them
 Whether through fate or fault when a levee fails
many will pay a price

Risk MAP (Mapping,
Assessment, Planning) Vision
Risk Analysis
Division
—
Risk MAP
Through collaboration with State, Local, and Tribal entities, Risk
MAP will deliver quality data that increases public awareness and
leads to action that reduces risk to life and property.

Risk MAP
 More Tools and Data
• Enhanced digital platform
and data
 Risk MAP will provide:
• Base flood elevation data
• Baseline risk assessments
• Visualization tools

Risk MAP
 More Assessment and
Planning
• Lead and support communities to
effectively engage in risk-based
mitigation planning resulting in
sustainable actions Address gaps in
flood hazard data to form a solid
foundation for risk assessment
 Risk MAP will provide:
• Tools that enable transparent
planning processes
• National Flood Hazard Layer
• Layers of multi-hazard risk
assessments

Risk MAP
Good data will make up the Risk MAP
foundation
Planning is the process
Communication is the key
Action to reduce risk is the result
