NMC Standards Sign Off Mentors

WHAT IS A SIGN OFF MENTOR?

– The sign off mentor is an assessor in practice who must hold a registration for the nursing branch in which the student is studying. In addition to meeting the outcomes for mentoring students the sign off mentor must also have met the following: – Have clinical currency in the field of practice that is being assessed.

– Have the same or higher academic qualification as the student they are assessing (i.e. if the student is a degree student the mentor must also have a degree) – Be on the local register of assessors in practice as a sign off mentor or a practice teacher.

– Been supervised in assessing the proficiency of students 3 times during a student’s final placement, and completed a portfolio of evidence. (or currently the equivalent as agreed with practice for existing senior/ key mentors) – Have a working knowledge of the pre-registration programme and the practice assessment strategy – Have an in depth understanding of their accountability to the NMC when deciding to Pass or Fail a student against the proficiencies for registration.

Sign Off Mentor Buddys

• As part of the development of new mentors, buddies will be required to help develop sign off mentor skills to meet the NMC standards.

• A buddy pack will be available from the prospective sign off mentor for the buddy to support new mentors in their area. • The Sign off pack is about self assessment of the standards and confirmation from a peer.

Sign Off Mentor Buddys

• Willing and able to meet with the perspective mentor 3 times .

• Have the knowledge, skills and expertise to provide appropriate support to the prospective Sign off mentor. • Meets NMC standard as a sign off mentor. • Further details form Susan.Davis @uwe.ac.uk

MNC Standards Sign Off Mentor

Students starting from September 2007- will require sign-off mentors to make the final assessment of practice and confirm to the NMC that the required proficiencies for entry to the register have been achieved. For the three year programme this will be in 2010.
