Application
Part 1: Board Policy

Our school has a written Board of Education
policy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in
extracurricular activities. Policy Attached*
*Sportsmanship policy was approved by North Central
Board of Education nka Norwayne Board of Education
on 2/28/2006

Norwayne Athletic Administrative policies
(attached) are outlined in our Norwayne
Local Athletic Department Handbook.
Grade levels covered by this policy are 7th –
12th grade. Handbooks are distributed and
reviewed with all coaches.

Student’s Athletic policies are distributed to
all student athletes at mandatory pre-season
meetings through the Athletic Code of
Conduct (attached). Coaches review the
Code of Conduct with students and parents.
Students and parents are required to sign
and return the Code of Conduct Agreement
to participate in Norwayne athletics.
Sportsmanship is communicated in our
district:
 To parents through pre-season meetings
 To the community at our Meet the Team
nights
 To the community through articles
posted on our District Website at
www.norwaynelocal.k12.oh.us
 To those attending competitions on our
Public Address system
Part 2: SEI Committee

Norwayne has a broad based
Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity
Committee.
• Sportsmanship Committee meetings are held four
times per year. Members include
•middle school and high school athletic directors
•alumni
•middle school and high school coaches
•middle school and high school principles
•middle school and high school parents

Part 2: SEI Committee
Examples

Coaches Film Sessions offered to parents &
community– parents & community members invited
in to view films and discuss intricacies in an effort to
educate parents and promote good sportsmanship
during contests.
Part 3: Presentations

Norwayne has adopted a
Sportsmanship, Integrity and Ethics
award for each sport. Awardees are
given a trophy and a certificate and
are honored during the respective
seasons’ sports banquet. Coaches
traditionally announce the recipient
and outline the character traits
portrayed by the individual athlete to
parents, community members and
fellow athletes during the Sports
Banquet. A photo of all award winners
along with the description of the
award are provided to area news
agencies for reporting to the
community at large.
Part 3: Presentations
Examples



Norwayne Sportsmanship Committee Agendas (attached)
provide schedules, agendas, dates, locations and
descriptions of all presentations.
Sign-in sheets are passed around and collected at each
preseason meeting. Coaches verify attendance by all
potential athletes.
Evaluation of the committee and it’s programs are
discussed as New Business at May meeting.
Additional Examples:
• High School student athletes routinely work with
middle school and elementary school teams
promoting mentorship.
• Coaches routinely call on officials to speak to
student athletes improving the overall respect for
rules and integrity within each sport.
• Sportsmanship and conduct expectations are
reinforced at pep rallies. Partial script for pep rallies
is approved by Norwayne administration.
Part 4: On-Going
Campaign

Our school has an on-going campaign that
promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

of sportsmanship, ethics

winners shown.
Part 4: On-Going Campaign
Examples


Cheerleaders lead positive cheers at designated student
sections for sporting events. Norwayne students
routinely receive commendations from visiting
administrators on their behavior and positive conduct
during events. Student section includes a school
administrator.
Norwayne schools provide administrative coverage for
athletic events. The high school administrator is
responsible for being near the student section during all
contests.

Norwayne has invested
considerable funds to
welcome both visiting and
home team members. Digital
display at stadium is
personalized with visiting
mascot or team name by
announcement staff.
Part 5: Evaluation
Norwayne’s evaluation of coaches
includes how they conduct themselves
and promote sportsmanship, ethics and
integrity.
• Coach/Advisor evaluation form attached
• Coach/Advisor evaluations are held at end of
specific sport season.
• Coaches are informed of district expectations
through the Administrative Manaul, (noted earlier)
through conversations with the athletic director,
building principal and superintendent.


Examples

Athletic Director and building principal research trends and
opportunities in areas of successful coaching strategies,
specifically those that address the importance of
sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. Articles are shared with
coaches/advisors.

Sportsmanship In Action - Norwayne High School track
coach, Mr. Jim Glessner, was recently commended in the
Wooster Daily Record for his outstanding sportsmanship.
After winning the Coach of the Year award at the Wayne
County Athletic League meet, he publicly passed the
award onto Coach Ausburger from Dalton for their
impressive record breaking performance this year.
Part 6: Handling
Complaints

Our school has a commitment to,
investigating and acting upon
complaints regarding
sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.
• Initial action following complaint consists of building
administrator interviewing complaintant and other
administrators with direct knowledge of incident. If
appropriate, administrator contacts individual(s). A sit-down
meeting is requested to discuss allegations and/or activities.
Sportsmanship policy is reviewed and expectations are
conveyed..
Part 6:
Handling Complaints
Examples
Follow-up actions are discussed including the possibility of
being banned from future competitions if behavior warrants /
persist. Complaintant is notified if deemed appropriate by
building administrator.


Part 7:
Critical Situations
There is currently no approved board policy.
Administrative plan follows:
 Extra security officers employed for big games
 Administrators are placed in critical areas
 Cheerleaders and pep-club members are encouraged to
promote good sportsmanship
 Arrange for pre-sale tickets
 Guide fans to correct seating areas to maintain proper
distance for student rivalries
 Contact Administration from other school upon arrival
Plan is implemented by the administrative team, athletic
director, principal and facility manager.
Part 7: Critical Situations
Examples
In interview with high school principal, by
staying aware of the crowd he is able to avoid
critical situations by utilizing the following
steps: Proximity, positive conversation with
those he feels are “on the edge”, negative
conversation, followed by removal from the
event. He noted that during the current school
year there were no incidents that escalated
past negative conversation.
Norwayne actively nominates and recognizes an area
community member for the OHSAA Outstanding Service award.
This award is presented at the Spring Sports Banquet each year
and is chosen by the Superintendent and Board of Education.
Criteria for this selection includes
* Ongoing supporter of Norwayne Athletics
* Consistently chooses to display characteristics of integrity in
the community
* Dedication to Norwayne community over and above normal
community support
Part 8: Awards Program
• In addition to our student awards program,
we have established a community
sportsmanship award to recognize outstanding
sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in
conjunction with outstanding support of our
Norwayne Athletes.
At the middle school level, teachers and
coaches choose an outstanding 8th grade
athlete - one male, one female – to receive the
Archie Griffin Award. The community is
reminded of the characteristics that make this
award and these awardees special at each 8th
grade promotion ceremony.

'Cats honor spring athletes

Norwayne High School finished up its 2010-11 sports year by
honoring its spring athletes at a recent banquet. Highlighting the
evening were the boys and girls track teams taking the Wayne
County Athletic League titles and the softball squad making a
regional appearance. The softball team completed play with a
