Radiation Technology Applications
OBJECTIVES
Radiation processing - treatment technology
application for development of Advanced
Materials for Industry & Health and
Environmental Protection – use of 60Co & EB
Besides established technologies and processes like
radiation sterilization of medical products, food
hygenisation, flue gas treatment etc., RCA countries
mainly focused on development and deployment of
several products and processes.





Grafted polymers for toxic metal ion absorbers
Hydrogel wound dressing
Polymer waste recycling and remediation
Plant growth promoters for agricultural use
Radiation engineering of nano materials
Electron beam processes for heat shrinkables, diamonds,
polymer composites, tyres, viscose rayon and cellulose

 Chemical formulations for surface curing and cable crosslinking
Radiation Technology Applications - Achievements
 Nano-materials based polymer composites and medical devices
 Electron beam (EB) and gamma radiation treatment of waste
water and effluents containing dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals
and pathogens
ROK established a New National Core Research Center for R&D of
Radiation Technology in Jeongup in 2005 to meet the rapidly growing
market in the areas of radiation technology.
major facilities: two 60Co irradiators using 420 kCi; 10 MeV electron
accelerator; ion beam accelerator of 300 keV; gamma irradiation farm
Relevant industries accommodated around the center.
ROK center playing a significant role for enhanced cooperation with RCA
member countries in the field of radiation technology.
Typical examples EB Processed Products
EB cross linked PE O ring gaskets withstand dimensional stability at high
temperatures of about 2000C
EB cross linked cable insulations for better
performance at 1200C and ageing properties
Hydro gels for wound/burn treatment
Diamond irradiation for color changes.
Plant Growth Promoters and super water absorbents for increasing crop yield
like rice and ground nuts, and bio chemicals like essential oils.

CONCLUSIONS
During the last 40 years, the RCA has played a very significant
role for development of technologies & human resources
through various activities under Thematic Sector – Industry.
 Most of the MSs have actively participated and benefitted by the projects
under Thematic sector – Industry  capacity & competency building
 A number of Radioisotope & Radiation based technologies have been
developed and deployed for sustainable development of industry and for
societal benefits  wider deployment facilitated
 Experience & progress achieved in various Member States have been shared.
 Significant human resource development has taken place due to these
activities through RTCs and Regional workshops.
 Information has been disseminated through publication of success stories
and monographs published by the IAEA.
