The Question of Quality
• CSO has to adhere to International Standards
set down for NSI’s (also apply to any other
producer of ‘European statistics’)
• Known as the European Statistics Code of
Practice (ESCoP)
• 15 different standards covering various
elements of statistical production
• Independence, release calendaring etc. etc.

• Produced by CSO and other bodies
• Up to now no code of practice for these
• To be launched on 21st November at SSISI

What is the ISSCoP?
• Subset of the ESCoP
• Covers main elements of independence and
objectivity required to ensure confidence in
Official Statistics
• CSO will launch along with practical
guidelines
• Discussing with public sector organisations to
sign up to the code

Why have a code of practice?
• Intention is to build a system which gives
people confidence in all official statistics
• CSO will launch a logo to identify statistics
adhering to the code
• Process will take time and engagement

What will happen next?
• Launch of ISSCoP (21st November)
• Organisations signing up to the code will agree
a list of Official Statistics with the DG of CSO
• Self-assessments
• Launch of ISS logo
• Extend range of organisations, statistics etc.
