CASE C4 Deki Andu water supply
Eritrea
by Manfred Arlt NCA
CASE Water supply Deki Andu Eritrea
• Eritrea is an arid and semi-arid country and is not endowed with rich water
recourses. Only 54% of population living in rural areas have access to safe water
supply http://www.eoearth.org/article/Water_profile_of_Eritrea). Groundwater is the
major water source. This case study is related to a potable water supply project in a
rural village in Eriteria, Deki Andu. The inhabitants of, have acquired potable water
supply as a result of the implementation of a project at a cost of 2.8 million Nakfa
(2.8 mill. Nakfa is about 1 mill NOK). The project was supported by Norwegian
Church Aid (NCA). The subsequent slides gives you more information about the
project. In order to make you familiar with the design and planning aspects of rural
water supply projects some questions have been formulated in the next two slides.
Use information from these ppt slides and the lectures week 42 and 43 as well as the
STEP UMB website to solve the case.
Questions
1.
How big must be the catchment area for assuring an adequate water supply for the population at the
end of the design period of 10 years with a population growth rate of 3% per year and a water demand
of 40 l/p.d? The infiltration to groundwater can be assumed to be 5% of the total annual rainfall.
Future population can be calculated using formula:
Future population Pn
Pn = Po (1 + r)n
n = years time
r = population growth rate (assume 0.03)
3. What are good features for hand-dug well to minimize the risk of contamination of the water?
4. Why are gender issues important in such projects?
List possible impacts of such a water scheme on women, girls, boys and men’s daily life and long
term impacts.
5. Outline the design of the water system:
Which capacity should a submersible pump have?
What is a proper size of the water storage tank?
What dimensions and types of pipes do you suggest to use?
6. Outline an operation and maintenance (O&M) plan for the water supply system.
7. What are important issues for the sustainability of such a water scheme?
