Catch Up Funding

• Payments were made to local authorities on 31 January 2013 and to academies and Free Schools on 1 February 2013.

• Expectation that the funding will be directed to additional literacy and numeracy catch-up support during Year 7 • The funding is not ring-fenced • Schools should make decisions about how it is best used in the context of their existing strategies to help underperforming students catch up.

GCSE Reform

• • Plans to have a single exam board will not proceed – instead existing GCSEs will be reformed • Qualifications should be linear, with all assessments normally taken at the end of the course. • Examinations will have fewer bite-sized and overly structured questions, and in mathematics there should be a greater emphasis on quantitative problem solving. • GCSEs will not force students to choose between higher and foundation tiers, for example, extension papers offering access to higher grades alongside a common core. • Ofqual have been asked to produce new GCSEs for mathematics ready for first teaching in 2015.

GCSE Reform

New accountability measures: • the percentage of pupils in each school reaching an attainment threshold in the vital core subjects of English and mathematics; • an average point score showing how much progress every student makes between KS2 and KS4 • Requirements for subject content in the reformed GCSE mathematics will be published for consultation, by May 2013 Respond by 1 May 2013
