CritApp wiki
A way for South Central library
staff to practice critical appraisal
• Many of us get training in critical appraisal
• But there are few obvious ways to practice
CA before the ‘real thing’
• Groups that meet are difficult and time
consuming to arrange.
• Playing with computers is fun!
CritApp wiki
• New article posted every week
• Links to article and CA checklist provided
Then discussion…
…using the comments section
CritApp Trial
• Five volunteers and DC took part in a five
week trial
• The five volunteers completed an
anonymous survey with six questions last
week.
• Full results available on request from
[email protected]
Results Summary
• Everyone thought the wiki was a good way
to practice Critical Appraisal.
• Everyone wanted to carry on using
CritApp after the trial.
• But only 2 of 5 people thought their CA
skills improved during the trial.
• Possibly due to time: 3 of 5 people said
they did not contribute as much as they
would have liked to the discussions.
• Time appears to be a key factor
• Wide variation in survey but probably
requires about 1-2 hours a week
• The survey indicated that if you can find
time to both critically appraise an article
and contribute to discussions then the
CritApp wiki is a good way to practice
critical appraisal
The Future…
• CritApp will continue if enough people are
interested in participating
• The wiki is continually developing to
incorporate the views of the participants
• How articles are selected, study types
appraised, the involvement of a CA expert,
and article turnaround times are issues
currently under review
• If you are interested take a look at
