Why Design?
What do you want to do when you
grow up?
• Some 70-year-olds still struggle with this
question, but you are expected to start
thinking about an answer at 14. If you
have a driving passion for something, you
might already know the answer. If that’s
you, congratulations. If, instead, you’re
like most people, then you don’t know for
sure what you want to do. This is where
this information should help you.
Have you considered a career in
Design and Technology?
• Namely; science, engineering, technology
or design
• Perhaps you think that the subject matter
is too hard or would limit what you can do.
The truth is the opposite: a good
background in any of these subjects can
open doors in any sector and lead you to
interesting and unexpected work.
Making Decisions
• Your decisions are more complicated than
those of past generations.
• First the world you will work in will change
rapidly because of the internet and the
digital revolution, which has always been
part of your life but barely existed when
you were born.
• Second, the nature of employment itself is
changing. Your career will include multiple
employers and jobs, and you will always
need to keep learning new skills. So don’t
write off technical subjects – the fewer
choices you close off now, the more
options you will have later. There are big
