The Essence…
This is how to smoothly pass through your
training years.
To do this you need:
1. To get through (annual) ARCPs
2. To pass the MRCPsych exam
Dynamic tension ?
• Formative
Assessment as a learning experience
• Summative
Not intrinsically educational; designed
as a “final grade” at the end of a period
of training/education
ARCPs
Annual Review of Competence Progress
Organized at a Deanery level
• Review of portfolio
• Reports from clinical supervisors
• Reports from educational supervisors
Decide whether you can progress or need
more time at this level (max 1 yr across 6)
Portfolio
•
Evidenced acquisition of competencies (mainly
through workplace based assessments)
•
Experiential activities as required by the
College curriculum (eg logbooks, publications,
research, audits)
•
Experiential activities beyond the requirements
of the College curriculum

Self-reflective narrative ?
Portfolios should be aiming for a
combination of evidence of activities and
self reflection on those activities
eg An introductory page to each section
outlining the evidence that will follow, what
you have learnt and how this leads
forward
Structure –
Royal College
Organization
• It has to have a sufficiently clear structure
for individual items (eg a specific WBPA)
to be found easily
Workplace-based
Assessments
Principles
• Generally “formative”
• Trainee led
• Guided by educational supervisor
• Planned in advance
• “Prospective”
• Patients (if involved) should have
consented

College electronic system
• Royal College has some resources for

• Incomplete
• Best for mini-PAT
• As things stand ARCP is still paper-based
