1. The event in the past: used to + verb
2. The event in the present: verb
EXAMPLE
I used to play with dolls, but now I play games on my computer.
People used to smoke in restaurants in the Netherlands, but now
they go outside to smoke.
WHEN
If you want to say that you did something in the past and make a
comparison with the present.
‘EXCEPTIONS’ attention!
In the second part of the sentence, the verb automatically gets a Dit is een
ontkennende zin. Je
+s.
maakt een zin
Why? This is the ‘shit’ rule.

EXAMPLE:
He used to play with dolls, but now he plays games on his
computer.
don’t/doesn’t .
He/she/it krijgt
doesn’t + het
werkwoord.
Er zou ook kunnen
staan: she used to
smoke at home , but
now she smokes
everywhere.
She used to smoke at home, but now she doesn’t smoke anymore.
My mum used to read that magazine every week, but now she
thinks it’s boring.
