Scope of ICMS
Initial Goal
 Monitor train running
 Monitor Status of Coaching Stock in real
time
 Ensure timely Maintenance Planning
including IOH/POH to minimize idling of
Coaches outside shop
Enhanced scope of ICMS


Coaching Operation Information System has been
renamed with enhanced scope as Integrated
Coaching Management System.
The scope of this application is to cover following:




Coaching Stock Management
Punctuality Module
Coaching Maintenance Module
Timetabling Module
Integrated Coaching Management
System



Punctuality Module
 This module has been implemented all over Indian Railways. This
module will be migrated to the same system on which Coaching
Stock Module is being implemented. This migrated module will be
offered for the testing by 20th June’06.
Coaching Stock Module
 Will be discussed in next slides.
Coaching Maintenance Module


This module will capture depot workflow related to Coach Maintenance.
Timetabling Module
 This module is again in two parts


Maintaining a Centralized database of trains time table and providing
centralized updating of time table data by all zones.
Simulation of time table which will help in planning, rake link
utilization etc.
Stages of ICMS Implementation


First Stage
In the first stage of this project, the Punctuality
of trains shall be addressed under Punctuality
Module. Punctuality will be shifted from current
NTES servers to COIS servers on FOIS network
by 20th June 06.
Punctuality Reporting may be shifted from
current system to thin clients at all divisional
control offices wherever Coaching Stock Module
has been rolled out & having thin client.
Stages of ICMS Implementation




Second Stage
In the second stage, Coaching Stock Module is being addressed. The
software is ready & it is being tested at HNZM station. The
Implementation of Coaching stock Module has been divided into
three phases.
Phase – I includes implementation at 12 major coaching hub
locations. All the Zonal Railways have been given directions for pin
pointing the terminal location for installing the COIS terminal,
provide connectivity & ensure site preparation at all these hub
location by 30th June 06 & commissioning of these locations by 31st
Aug. 06.
Implementation at locations covered under Phase – II has been given
the target as 31st Oct. 06.
Implementation at locations covered under Phase – III has been
given the target as 31st Dec. 06 for commissioning.

Stages of ICMS Implementation
Third Stage


In the third stage of, Coaching Maintenance Module
is being addressed. Coaching Maintenance Module
can be implemented only after the scope of the
module is received from Railway Board.
This module will have integration with Coaching
Stock Module & hand shake will be ensured in
various events.
Stages of ICMS Implementation


Fourth Stage
In the fourth stage of, Time tabling is being addressed.
Time tabling Module has two parts; (1) Centralized trains
time table & (2) Simulation Module.
Centralized Trains Time Table
Maintaining of centralized database of trains with following
attributes
(a) Train Definition
(b) Validity period of the train definition
© Days of Run
(d) Train Profile
(e) Train Schedule (list of stations with timings)etc.
Providing soft copy for printing of IR Time table.
This part of the module will also be ready by 31st Dec. 06.
Stages of ICMS Implementation
(Contd..)

(a)
(b)
(c)
Simulation Module
Simulating the suitable timings for running of all
kinds of trains.
Simulating the best available path for planning a
train keeping in view all variables.
Simulating optimum utilization of rake link.
This Module is still at the age of defining
the requirement specifications which is
awaited from Railway Board.
ICMS Estimate




COIS was sanctioned in 2003-04 at the estimated
cost of Rs. 7.0 Cr.
For Punctuality implementation Rs. 1.43 Cr was
sanctioned.
With conversion of COIS project to Integrated Coach
Management System Project, the estimate has been
revised to 42 Cr and the sanction is awaited from
Railway Board.
There are 136 COIS locations with 495 thin clients.
Broad Objectives of Integrated
Coach Management System







To monitor the condition and location of the coaching
stock .
To monitor the coaching rakes, their locations, arrival –
departure .
To work as a management tool to provide for planning
and rescheduling of rakes.
To work as a management tool to optimize utilization of
each coach and timely maintenance (POH) and repairs.
Prompt planning for idle coaches and their timely
bookings and usage to generate more review for the
Railways.
To avoid manual manipulations and to provide fool-proof
service to enhance the image of the Railways.
To provide MIS for Coaching Operations.

Punctuality Module to be migrated on new system (will be offered for testing by 20th
June’06)
Coaching Stock Module. Phase – I has been given the target as 31st Aug.’06, Phase – II has
been given the target as 31st Oct. 06 & Phase – III has been given the target as 31st Dec. 06.
Coaching Maintenance Module can not be implemented till the scope of this module is not
received from Railway Board.
Timetabling Module is still at the age of defining the requirement specification which are
awaited from Railway Board.
Integration with other Applications
Integration with control charting application will provide exact position of rolling
stock.
Production units information system RCF and ICF will interface with the system to
obtain data of stock introduced.
Integration with PRS to analyze the traffic demand as well as for day to day working
with damaged coaches,charting etc.
Interfacing with workshop management module to have more clear picture of coaches
in shop.
Software Design




Application design will be MVC (Model ,View & Controller)Arch
only.
Model is for data representation and business logic,
Views that provide data presentation and user input(jsp),
Controller to dispatch requests (servelet).
Software Design
Contd..


The business layer provides only application functionality, with no
reference to presentation. The presentation layer presents the data and
input prompts to the user (or to another system), delegating application
functionality to the business layer.
Separating business logic from presentation has some important
benefits:
-Minimizes impact of change
-Increases maintainability
Technology Platform



Java based technology J2EE architecture is being used.(WebSphere
Application Server)
Backend is RDBMS Oracle 10g.
This application will ride on the same network as that of FOIS.

System Architecture




User will connect to Web servers through browser
interface
The user will be having Thin clients at their location that
will be having internet browsers.
At the back-end will be the database server(RDBMS with
High Availability)
Middle tier will have application servers with load
balancing features
