WVXX Radio’s Position in The Hampton Roads Hispanic Market
WVXX Selecta 1050 is currently the only local electronic media that reaches the Hispanic community. WVXX has been in our
current Spanish format for over 3 years and we broadcast live 24 hrs a day 7 days a week, with a signal that easily covers the
entire Hampton Roads ADI.
The other mediums in the market are Cox Cable( 6 channels all network), Tidewater Hispanic, El Echo, and saborhr.com. Cox
does not offer local avails which means there is no opportunity to buy local commercials on the channels unless you buy the
network which makes no sense for local advertisers. Tidewater Hispanic and El Echo are both local papers with limited
distribution due to the fact that The Va Pilot has most of the major distribution areas tied up which will not allow them to occupy
any space. They are both free publications. Saborhr is the only Hispanic website in the market and is a very good product. The
most cost effective way to reach the Hispanic community by far is with WVXX. Radio is by far the medium of choice by the
Hispanic community with a Time spent listening of over 20hrs per week. The best station in this market regardless of format would
be happy with 6 hours per week. They are very loyal listeners!
WVXX has built some very strong long term relationships with many large advertisers such as BB@T Bank, McDonalds,
Budweiser, Hardees, Tidewater Community College, Wendy’s, Toyota, Old Point National Bank, Verizon Wireless, Moneygram,
The Priority Automotive group, Casey Auto, First Team, Kroger just to name a few. We expect to see a number of these bigger
advertisers move into this market as they have already saturated the top 15 markets across the country.
The Spanish formats are rapidly popping up all across the US.In a survey done by Arbitron recently it shows that the top 3 formats
in the US are Country, Adult Contemporary, and Spanish. There are now over 780 Spanish Radio Stations in the US.
We know how important it is to be a partner with the Hispanic community, out listeners. We are very active in The Hispanic
Chamber. We work closely and help promote events that help the community with such problems as immigration, getting
citizenship, healthcare, and many other things that are important to them. We have a Latin Festival that we do every year on The
Va Beach Oceanfront, We are part of the American Music festival, and this year we will host the first Hispanic Heritage Month
Celebration
We feel that we have positioned ourself to be a respected market leader, and our Management team has over 50 years
experience in the broadcast industry. We look forward to serving and growing with the Hispanic community in the years to come.
Hispanic Market Overview for Hampton Roads
Hampton Roads is the 13th fastest growing Hispanic Market in the US and one of the most diverse. The
breakout of the Hispanic market is 50 to 55% Mexican, 25% Puerto Rican, and the remainder are others such
as Cubans, Hondurans, San Salvador, and other South American Countries. The largest influx of new
Hispanics are by far from Mexico. The Puerto Rican community has been here many years mainly via the
military.
The 2008 Census shows 47,000 Hispanics that have their citizenship, and this makes up only about 30% of
the entire population. These numbers do not show the Military (which is 10% Hispanic), people here with work
visas, and Green cards, and of course the one’s that are here illegally. This puts the number closer to 200,000
in The Hampton Roads Market .
The average household income for The Hispanic consumer is $46,866 annually which is slightly below that of
the Non Hispanic community of $57,911 which surprises some people only because they are not aware that
there are more people in each household and more important they all work.
The Hispanic population is divided almost equal between the Southside and the Peninsula, with a slightly
bigger number on the peninsula. The Hispanic population is projected to grow by 20 to 25% in The Hampton
Roads area by the year 2013 and that number could be higher when there is some type of immigration law put
into effect.
The major companies and a lot of the medium and smaller businesses are all starting to realize the financial
impact that the Hispanic community is having on this market. You can go into Home Depot, Lowe’s, Food Lion,
Wal mart, Sam’s Club just to name a few and see that their signs are both in English and Spanish, and the
demand for bi lingual employees is higher than ever before. The major automotive dealers have several bi
lingual employees not just in sales but in all positions to accommodate the growing Hispanic consumer.
