Design Principles

• Proven design concept • The City Class tram from TRAM Power Ltd. • Has world wide application.

• Innovative design and “components off the shelf”.

• Components off the shelf (COTS) reduces • costs • Low initial, low maintenance and low whole life costs. • The City Class tram is a highly efficient public transport vehicle.

• Can compete with buses on operating costs.

Matches light rail for speed and comfort.

Mechanical

• TRAM Power design bogie – low track forces (bogie weight = 2200 kg) • All wheels separately rotate – eliminating curve squeal • Wheels individually removable – for maximum life (>300,000 km) • Ultra comfort resilient wheel, need not be same diameter – Smoother ride for passengers • Central Articulation carried on two wheels – best use of space

Electrical

• Body mounted traction motors – easy maintenance • No equipment inside passenger saloon – full width flat floor • The light weight (22 tonnes) reduces power – saves more in electricity than the initial purchase price. – saves on infrastructure requirements. • Three phase AC drive, with regeneration to stand still • Programmable acceleration / braking and jerk rates • 10% gradient capable • PLC “fly by wire” control system

Testing

• Mock up – built 1993 for trade exhibition • Slave vehicle – 1930 tram with – TRAM Power equipment at one end – operated 1995 - 1997 • Prototype – tested at Blackpool 1998 and 2000 – with HMRI approval.

Mock up

• 4 tonne • Low/High floor - 25% length full size • Exhibited and market research in – Birmingham, Blackpool, Chatham, Dublin, Edinburgh, Gloucester, Liverpool, London & Sheffield

Slave Tram

• Redundant 1930’s tram for scrapping • One original bogie and drive removed • TRAM Power bogie • 90kW 3phase industrial motor and • Inverter drive fitted • Tested on Blackpool Tramway 1995 - 1997

Prototype Tram

• 29m long • single articulation • bogie, motor and inverter from Slave tram • with second identical set added • tested with HMRI approval 1998 - 2000

Production Vehicle

• Prototype completely refurbished 2005 • new motors – smaller – more powerful • new inverters – smaller – more powerful
