The National Curriculum
What is it?
It is a legal requirement for all children between the ages of five and
sixteen in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, to study the National
Curriculum (except those in private schools). There are several groups
that advise on what should be taught, and therefore what is in the
National Curriculum, but the final decision on content rests with the
Secretary of State for Education.

Levels in the National
Curriculum
Previously at the end of each Key Stage - at the ages of 7, 11,
14 and 16 - students are tested, although as you may be
aware the key stage 3 test has now been scrapped. For each
test or exam, the government has set different levels of
attainment which are expected of children at each particular
Key Stage. For key stage 2 this is:
Level 1 – 3
Level 4
Level 5
Working towards target for age group
Achieved level for age group (About 80%)
Exceeds target for age group

Level 6 Tests



The government have introduced optional level 6
tests.
Level 6 is often not achieved by pupils in year 9 or
10 at secondary school so is it exceptionally high
and potentially involves a very small number of
pupils.
We still not have made a decision about the level 6
test and will do so nearer the time. We will contact
you if this affects your child.

What can I do to help?







Ensure children attend school regularly and on time.
Ensure regular bedtimes. Tired children cannot perform
at their best.
Take an interest in the child's work by going through it
with them. Talk to them about key words and meanings,
particularly in maths.
Play some games, or practise mental arithmetic,
especially multiplication tables.
Websites, etc can be useful
Ensure homework is completed and listen to your child
read.
Above all, keep calm! It can be a worrying time for year
6 pupils, and they may need lots of reassurance and
encouragement, although they need to know this is an
important time. Let us know if they are becoming over
anxious eg not sleeping.

Teacher Assessment




Teachers will give all Year 6 children formal Teacher
Assessment for (TA) for Mathematics, Science and
English (broken down into areas)
This assessment will be based on their work at school,
particularly during their last year
Whereas the National Tests give a ‘snapshot’ on one
day, the TA gives a far broader-based judgement of the
child’s abilities. They should be read together and the
government say they are equally weighted.
The National test level and the TA level may be different
due to a number of factors. The child may perform
better, or worse, under formal test situations.
15
How do we find out the results?
•
We should be in a position to send home the results by
middle of July. (Last year it was about 12th July) Due to
several problems over the past few years we have
stopped giving a specific date!
•
When we receive the results we have to check them,
refer any mistakes back and collate the results before
sending them out.
•
Parents will also be provided with a breakdown of the
% of children achieving each level at Portway Juniors
and the previous year’s national results
