Nathaniel Hawthorne
• He was born in 1804 and died 1864
• Birth place was Salem Massachusetts
• One of his ancestors was one of the judges in
the Salem Which Trials
• Attended Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1824
– During this time befriended the future
president Franklin Pierce
• Pursued a writing career/ wrote many well
know books
• He died in a New Hampshire hotel room
FACTS
• Returned to Salem after college and set himself up in
what he called a “dismal chamber”
• He became engaged in 1838 to an illustrator named
Sophia Peabody and got married in 1832
• Hawthorne and Sophia had 3 children named Una
(Mental victim and died at a young age), Julia, Rose.
• He was rewarded with a position of the United States
Council in Liver Pool 1853
