Medieval Book Page
Books in the Middle Ages
⌂ Books were very expensive in the Middle
Ages, as each was written and illustrated
by hand!
Books in the middle ages were treasured as works of art
and symbols of enduring knowledge. They were even
known as “ attributes of God”.
Every stage in the creation of a book in medieval
times required intensive labor, sometimes involving
the collaboration of entire workshops!
Parchment for the pages had to be made from dried
hides of animals, cut to size and sewn by hand.
Inks had to be mixed, pens prepared, and the
pages ruled for lettering.
The pens used were quill pens made from the
feather of a goose or swan. The end of the
feather was cut to form a writing nib.
A scribe would then copy the text from an
established edition.
Artists would embellish the pages with
illustrations, decorate initials and put
ornaments in the margins.
The most lavish books were bound in covers set
with enamels, jewels and ivory carvings.
The entire process, depending on the
intricacy of the book, could take an entire
monastery months, or even years to produce
a single volume.
Many bookmakers in the middle ages were
monks and monasteries had huge libraries.
The production of books provided a major
source of income for monasteries and
churches.
