Introduction to the Primary Years Program Created by Terry Spears, PYP Coordinator Carlisle School

Introduction to the PYP

Central Idea of this presentation:

The PYP is an all inclusive international curriculum framework that involves learners ages 3-12 in their own construction of meaning through collaborative planning, purposeful inquiry, and authentic assessment.

The transdisciplinary themes of PYP are the conceptual organizers that guide curriculum design.

• • • • • • Who we are Where we are in place and time How we express ourselves How we organize ourselves Sharing the planet How the world works

Programme of Inquiry (POI)

The Programme of Inquiry is a framework, organized into transdisciplinary themes, which provides a balanced, integrated school-wide experience.

• • • Snapshot of a vertically and horizontally aligned curriculum Gives a focused, purposeful approach to student learning (avoids repetition of topics and irrelevant material) Displayed in a significant location for all to see

Carlisle School Program of Inquiry 2012-2013

What is Inquiry Learning?

As learners, we all use previous experiences to help us face new challenges. Inquiry is the process by which a learner uses their background knowledge to approach new situations, and asks questions to find out more.

PYP and Assessment

“Assessment is the gathering and analysis of information about student performance. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning process.” PYP Assessment Handbook, January 2001

Assessment

Assessment is the process of gathering information about student learning.

Strategies include: observations, performance assessments, project based assessments, and open ended tasks.

Why We Chose to Implement PYP in our School

• Through the Learner Profiles and the Attitudes, the PYP Program nurtures the the development of the whole child-intellectually, socially, and physically.

• The Primary Years Program encourages international-mindedness in our students.

• PYP students become life-long learners as the program actively engages students in inquiries and develops their awareness of the process through reflection • The program reflects real life by encouraging learning beyond and through traditional subjects with meaningful in-depth inquiries into the human condition.

• The Primary Years Program lays the foundation for a continuum of excellence in education for our students grades preschool 3 –through 12 th grade in our IB World School
