In small groups identify key words that you would associate
with a coach to create your own definition. Discuss and
compare the definitions within the group.

Draw around one of your peers on flip chart
paper and build what you would perceive as a
sports coach. This could include their primary
roles, responsibilities and skills. Use words
that are put in a suitable position on the
outline to demonstrate this.

coach of your choice.
Create a small report which justifies why you feel they are a
good coach focusing on their strengths, achievements,
abilities, roles techniques etc...
You must provide examples to justify your argument and be
able to pose questions to the opposition surrounding their
views on their chosen coach.


A Sports Coach needs to understand that there are
many different roles, at varying levels they may
need to undertake, to assist the development of
the athlete and team.
In groups write down….
1. What might some of these roles be? e.g.
educator/teacher.
2. What this means and why it is important
3. Paint a picture with words; describe the
relevant features of the role
4. Say “how, why and when” the role would be
used
5. Give an example or build a scenario
6. Why might taking on the role help develop or
improve an athlete or team?
