Professor Dr. Zainuddin Abdul Manan
Dr. Zainuddin Abdul Manan is an Energy Professional, a Professor and the Founding Director of Process Systems
Engineering Centre (PROSPECT), Univ Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor. He has a BSc in Chemical Engineering
from Univ of Houston, USA, an MSc in Process Integration from Centre for Process Integration, UMIST, UK, and PhD in
Chemical Engineering from Univ of Edinburgh, Scotland. He has worked as a production engineer with Hume Industries.
For 15 years, he has been extensively involved as a researcher, consultant and trainer for chemical process industries in
the area of process systems engineering with emphasis on efficient energy utilisation (pinch analysis) and waste
minimization. He has completed over 40 research and consultancy projects involving petrochemicals, fine chemicals, pulp
and paper and food production industries in Malaysia and abroad. He is also an experienced instructor for professional
courses related to chemical and process engineering, having taught over 250 companies nationwide.

Date 29-Jun to 1 July-2009
UTM City Campus, Kuala Lumpur
Mr. Hishamudin is a Programme Manager at Pusat Tenaga Malaysia, PTM. He holds a B. Eng Degree in Mechanical
Engineering from University of Malaya and M. Sc. in Energy Technology from University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He has
worked as a facility engineer in research park and mechanical engineer in M&E consulting company specializing in
hospital projects before joining PTM. In PTM he has conducted walk-through and detail energy audits in many
manufacturing sites and buildings in Malaysia. He is also in-charge in a Building Benchmarking project for office buildings
in Malaysia. He is the Honorary Secretary of The Malaysian Energy Professional Association, MEPA since 2003. He has
represented PTM in many seminars and meetings in energy efficiency initiatives locally and abroad.

energy
benchmarking
analysis
Evaluate energy losses, assess potential areas of
improvement and outline energy efficiency improvement
program.
Apply specific thermal and electrical energy
conservation and optimisation strategies for utility
system and various process equipment.
Assess options and screen technologies for renewable
energy as well as potential for emission reduction
through carbon trading and clean development
mechanism (CDM).
A Holistic Approach for Sustainable
Energy Management…
Volatile energy prices caused by fluctuating energy
demands and supply have made energy efficiency
critical in reducing companies’ operating costs, cut down
process emissions, improve a company’s bottom line
and ultimately ensure sustainability of businesses.
Energy efficiency measures employed by companies are
generally confined to measures such as the employment
of good housekeeping techniques, demand side
management, the upgrading of boilers, steam systems.
A key point to note is that these are primarily measures
for improving a process’ service facility, i.e. the utility
system.
Very few of the companies are willing to
venture deep into process operations to maximise
energy reduction. As a result, benefits that can be
derived from an energy audit exercise can be limited.
COURSE FEE
RM 2,000 per participant (50% discount for student, ID

This module provides a holistic approach for effective
and sustainable energy management for a company
which considers managerial as well as technical aspects
from integration of energy management into a
company’s structure and practice and a wide range of
technical energy improvement options beyond the utility
systems in order to maximize energy efficiency and
hence, cost savings. The module is designed towards a
do-it-yourself (DIY) energy management. It presents
simple and practical approaches for organizational
energy management, state-of-the art analysis and
improvement
techniques
to
facilitate
energy
management exercise.
