PTA Brunch Gathering www.ccckws.edu.hk Aims We aim at helping students in the DSE curriculum. Paper I Reading 20% 1.5 hours Paper II Writing 25% 2 hours Paper III Listening & Integrated Skills Paper IV Speaking SBA 10% 30% 2 hours 20 minutes 15% 5 minutes (Individual Presentation) 10 minutes (Group Discussion) Must Read Passages A custom-designed booklet was compiled by the Form Coordinator for each form. Besides the School motto and the Lord’s Prayer on the first page, the booklet consists of 12 passages (10 passages for S6). Each of them has two parts, namely the ‘Core’ and the ‘Extended’ parts. Students must be able to read aloud those passages and have the Core parts in their dictations. Teachers will decide whether or not and how to adopt the ‘Extended’ parts, which are of a higher level of difficulty, according to the ability of different students. Dictation/Quiz book A KWS exercise book should be used as the dictation/quiz book as before. ‘Content page’ should be filled in each time. You may consider leaving one or two more pages for the content. Though teachers have to abide by the school-based dictation guidelines, flexibility is allowed for the utilization of the above-mentioned passages to cater for diverse needs, e.g., select some vocabulary for dictation, let students choose whether to write the extended part to get bonus marks, ask students to recite it, etc. However, mere vocabulary dictation is not encouraged; vocabulary dictation must be put in context, e.g., fill-inthe-blank dictations. By so doing, teachers could choose to assign a word range wider than that will be in the actual dictation. As for the means of dictation, we can arrange ‘graded’ dictations (Students will start with the first paragraph from a particular passage in their dictation with one extra paragraph added in subsequent dictations until the whole passage is covered) to let students see their progress. Speaking Book A KWS exercise book will be used as the Speaking Book. The Speaking Book is one of the assignment books which might be called for homework inspection. It includes the core parts (reinforce the 12 or 10 [S6] core passages in the Must Read Passages Booklet) and any other speaking materials designed by the teacher concerned. Students can be asked to copy the passages from the Booklet into this Speaking Book for revision purpose. Students are supposed to be able to read aloud or do individual presentation based on the core passages in class. Teachers should demonstrate reading aloud in class though the related audio clips recorded by the NET will be uploaded to eclass/iLAP at a later stage. Classwork Book 1. There should be content page(s) for Classwork book, thus we have to remind students to spare space for this purpose. 2. The content that should be included in each lesson: i. lesson preparation ii. learning objectives (e.g. learn to write a formal letter, learn to distinguish “make” & “do”…) iii. notes about what they have learnt iv. students’ own reflection on what they have learnt v. teacher’s conclusion (optional) vi. assignment Free writing All students are required to submit free writing. It is strongly recommended that public exam classes should do it once a week in order to have more practice. It can come in many different formats. Besides writing on certain topics chosen by the teacher, it can also be newspaper clippings, journal writing, sentence making or parallel writing, etc. If the writing assignments are not marked in detail, a grade or some comments should be given. Corrections are not compulsory. Assignments of the “Reading Scheme” There should be two ‘after-reading activities’ per term. Each student should borrow at least ONE English book from the school library once a month. Teachers should take students to the library to borrow books regularly if needs arise. Students should not borrow books on behalf of their classmates, and neither should the teachers, as troubles may arise at times. Best Presenter Awards Each student has to do at least two oral book reports / presentations per term. The best one will be selected to enter the Best Presenter Competition in April. The name of the Best Presenter of each class should be ready in April. The marks of presentation are put as part (~20%) of the final oral exam marks. Homework inspection (1) A. S.4 Marking: 1.
