Hypothesis-based Inquiry An experiment that is set up to prove or disprove a hypothesis. Hypothesis-based inquiry = Experiment Control Group vs. Experimental Group Control Group Experimental Group The group that is not The group that the tested. It ensures that experiment is performed only one variable is being on. tested. Make sure everything is the same between the two groups, except for what is being test. Data Collection Collect the measurable information that determines if the hypothesis is correct or incorrect. Independent Variable The part of the experiment that is changed to produce results. Dependent Variable The measured change due to the independent variable. It is called the dependent variable because it depends on the independent variable. SATP Practice 1. An experiment should have a control because it allows a scientist to test: A) a conclusion B) a mass of information C) several variables D) a single variable 2. Janice tests the effects of sunlight on bean seed germination. What is the independent variable? A) amount of sunlight B) the number of bean seeds C) rate of germination D) water SATP Practice 1. Caleb tests the effects of caffeine on the heart rate of 10 people. What is the dependent variable? A) the 10 people B) the caffeine C) heart rate D) 5 of the people 2. What is the set of steps used to collect information to test a hypothesis called? A) a principle B) a control C) a theory D) an experiment
