If your student doesn’t meet the prerequisites for
Foreign Language this year, it’s recommended
that they take a Fine Art course to fulfill the one
year Fine Art requirement for CSU/UC systems.

AVID

AVID is an elective class offered to students who would
like to prepare for four-year universities.

The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration,
reading, note-taking and study skills, as well as college,
career, and motivational activities.

Students must commit to taking notes in subject-area
classes on a daily basis.

Other requirements for applicants are satisfactory
citizenship, good attendance, and a G.P.A. of 2.5-3.9.

Study Skills

This class is designed to support students
who struggle with grades because they
need academic skills, organizational and
study skills, and would benefit from the
support of an intervention teacher.
Summer School 2015
Purpose:
Summer school is primarily designed for remediation or
making up deficiencies toward graduation.
Location:
Buchanan High School
Dates:
June 16th – July 29th Independent Study
June 22nd -July 30th Regular Summer School
Time:
8:00 – 5:00 Tuesday and Wednesday (Ind. Study)
8:30 – 2:35 Monday – Thursday (Regular)
Regular summer school schedules will be mailed
Independent summer school students will be contacted via phone


Adhere to a strict attendance policy (miss more than 1 day and
students will be dropped!)

Need to pass during the Sophomore,
Junior or Senior year.

Taken once during Sophomore year, and
multiple times in subsequent years.
Passing Score is 350 for ELA and Math
PSAT/Aspire
PSAT- practice for the SAT
 Aspire- practice for the ACT
(Both will be administered in October 2015)
(Registration forms for both exams will be
found in the fall registration packet)

State Assessment

This is an important test that students
take once a year in each of the core
areas.

These results are used for class and for
summer school placement.

NCAA

There are course and GPA requirements for the
NCAA Div 1 and 2.

NCAA requires 16 Core Courses. 10 of the 16 core
courses must be complete before the 7th semester
(senior year) of high school. 7 of the 10 core
courses must be in English, Math, or Science.

If your student is interested in college athletics,
speak with your counselor as soon as possible to
discuss the NCAA requirements and steps to
eligibility

