Internet Of Things

What is IOT all about

Internet of Things (IoT)

is the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing internet infrastructure.

Typically IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes beyond

Machine to Machine Communications (M2M)

and covers a variety of protocols, domains, and applications.

The Internet of Things (IoT) incorporates physical devices into business processes using predictive analytics. While it relies heavily on existing internet technologies, it differs by including physical devices (e.g. robots, cars, home appliances), specialized protocols (e.g. Modbus, OPC, DNP3), physical analytics (e.g., pressure, temperature, torque), and a unique partner network.

Common Applications

IOT Devices in business can range from simple to complex: Eg: Bar Codes devices, Tank level monitoring, RFID devices, GPS tracking, Temperature sensing, Building automation, Factory Automation, Vehicle telematics, Smart shelves, Smart vending The interconnection of these embedded devices (including smart objects), is expected to usher in automation in nearly all fields, while also enabling advanced applications like a Smart Grid – everything from mobile phones and home electronics to sensors in vehicles, on assembly lines and even embedded in animals and plants!

How BIG Is It

Some technology analysts predict that by the year 2020, we’ll have 28 billion “things” connected to the network

How to Develop

At the Internet of Things World Forum in Chicago, IBM announced the IBM internet of Things Foundation, which makes it possible for a developer to quickly and easily extend an Internet-connected device such as a sensor or controller into the cloud, build an application alongside the device to collect the data and get access to real-time insights.

Any Takers ?

Three companies have already took advantage of the IoT to improve their business:

Vestas, Pratt & Whitney and San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit

Platform

The IoT Foundation service is part of IBM Bluemix, IBM’s leading cloud application platform. It delivers rapid access to, and provides valuable insights from, IoT device data coming from billions of Internet connected sensors and controllers. IBM Bluemix is an open-standards, cloud platform for building, managing and running applications of all types, including for the web, mobile, big data and smart devices.

Advantages

By placing all this connectivity in the cloud, equipment and asset manufacturers can use IoT to provide remote service and monitoring to residential and commercial customers, oil and gas companies can remotely monitor and provide predictive maintenance to critical equipment, and logistics companies can track and monitor the condition of goods in transit.
