The Year 10 Subject Selection Process – Ms. Alicia Richardson The Year 10 Program • Transition into senior years • Support and direction towards VCE • Broad experience of subjects • Cater for boys’ needs in a creative and challenging way • Develop their life skills The Year 10 Program • Core Subjects taken for the whole year • Religious Education (including Eucharist) • English or VCE Literature or VCE Foundation English • Year 10 Maths or Advanced Maths or Alternative Maths • Sport The Year 10 Program Core Subjects taken for a semester by all students: • Science • Humanities • Physical Education The Year 10 Program • Elective subjects taken for a semester • The Arts (1) • Technology (1) • Free Choice (3) • LOTE and VCE subjects = two elective choices Promotion to Year 10 • Challenged where boys receive less than 50 in two or more Semester 1 subjects • A ‘Show Cause’ process will start in Term 3 • Boys should: • Still complete the subject selection process • Not assume they will be promoted Units 1 / 2 VCE Studies • Biology • History • Health and Human Development • English Literature • Business Management Units 1 / 2 VCE Studies • High performing students • 85% in corresponding Year 9 subject • 80% average in all other Year 9 subjects • Subject will not appear on Web Preferences if criteria not met • Strictly enforced • Appeal process for students who just miss out Units 1 / 2 VCE Studies • A challenge for capable students • Early start to VCE • ATAR score Appeal Process • Boys should: • Fully complete the subject selection process as normal • Complete the Appeal Form (see ‘Learning’ section of College website) • Return the Appeal Form to their Head of House by stipulated date (Friday 1 August) Year 10 Pathways • Students considering VCE or VCAL • Selection will be on an individual basis • TAFE “Taster Program” in Semester 1 • Work placement in Semester 2 • Applied Mathematics and English • Two elective subjects • Active Citizenship of Humanities • Applied Science instead of Science Key Questions • Am I interested in it? • Am I good at it? • Does it link with my VCE program in 2016? • Am I capable of starting VCE early? • Is this subject in the direction of my career aspiration? Selecting a Course Of Studies • Boys interested in VCE Science should select the supporting Year 10 Elective • Students wishing to do VCE Physics or Chemistry must do corresponding Science electives in Year 10 Subject Selection Boys will receive Web Preference password on Monday 21 July Web Preference subject selection closes 6pm Friday 1 August Subject Selection • Subjects may not run due to insufficient numbers • Subject clashes will occur • Term 4 students advised of 2015 subjects Advice • Subject selection materials (see ‘Learning’ section of College website) • Heads of House • Heads of Department • Mr. Beurs (Pathways Co-ordinator) Making Considered Choices • Seek information to make informed decisions • Assess strengths and weaknesses • Think ahead when making choices • Interest • Capability • Career Strategies For Doing Well • Establish study habits now that will ensure you reach your potential • 1.5 Hours home study per night • Homework Club – Monday & Wednesday (Mannix Campus) • Maths Tutoring – Monday (Bosco Campus)
