This Presentation



To share some of my observations on my
journey to integrating technology seamlessly
into my teaching/learning environment.
To inspire you to try something new in your
classroom.
To hear about what you have tried/use with your
students.
2
Who am I?

Masters of Educational Technology through UBC

I teach grade 5 using a blended environment


(2005)
goal: to use variety of technology…“…making the
curriculum accessible to all students….to create a variety
of pathways to learning” (Hollas, Betty, 2005,
Differentiated Instruction)
guiding questions: why, how, what cost, when, what and
which technology best supports my students’ learning
3
Why Move In this Direction?
societal changes

driving changes in learning

driving changes in teaching

driving me to change
4
What is a blended learning
environment?




face-to-face + computer mediated learning
wikipedia “… process of incorporating many different
learning styles…”
Charles Graham: “…Blended learning systems combine
face-to-face instruction with computer-mediated
instruction.”
George Siemens: would refer to what I do as teaching in
an “augmented classroom” …”integrating new tools into
existing teaching activities”








engagement levels
confidence levels
independent learning skills
access anytime, anywhere learning
transparency
new pathways
information dissemination
storage
access to experts

Challenges I Have Encountered






time
 classroom & personal learning
 keeping links current, pages edited
sufficient equipment
reliable equipment
technology support (everyone busy)
displacement of other resources
using computers in diverse ways

I hope that I have inspired you to play with
technology, in some new way, to support your
learners. I invite you to take time to play a bit
