• The pyrheliophoro was invented in 1900 by portougese scientiste Manuel António Gomes known as Father Himalaya.

• Father Himalaya • Born in 1868, in Cendufe • Father Himalaya was only seventeen when he built a machine that could transform nitrogen and increase the fertility of the soil

• He was a priest, a vegetarian, a Nature lover, a self trained biologist and a practitioner of natural medicine.

• He became member of the Portuguese Science Academy. • He died in 1933 in Portugal.

The sun machine

• A gigantic solar furnace with equally gigantic lens • It means »I bring the sun's fire« • First experiment in October 1903 • Built and presented in 1904, in St. Louis, at the World’s Great Exhibition

• 80 squared meters • Reaches 3500°C • 6177 tiny mirrors • Steel frame 13 meters high • Painted a bright blue

Use of pyrheliophoro

• To provide energy: – for the production of hot water or steam – for industrial processes

Pyrheliophoro was made in 21st century. It was presented in British television miniseries James May's Big Ideas.

• This invention way extremely important because it was the base of the creation of the first solar collectors and photovoltaic modules.

• Despite this enormous success, the Pyrheliophoro has never been commercialised.
