Joint ADL Co-Lab
Prototypes
DoD Training Transformation
Technologies
5 September 2003
1
Purpose
R&D PROGRAM
• Investigate issues and challenges to assist the
services in implementing ADL solutions
– Right Training, Right Time, Right Way
• Add to the “bag of tools” ADL designers and
developers need
– Concrete examples
– Lessons Learned
– Emerging techniques and technologies
2
Changes from the Past
• Bigger investment – more directed prototypes
• ADL exemplars
• Data to support decision making
• Greater experience and knowledge of ADL techniques
& technologies
• Emphasis on ADL R&D
3
Focus on Quality
• Emphasizing the “A” and the “L” in ADL
– Melding technology and learning together
• Exploring effective techniques, methodologies, and
technologies.
• Content and applications that:
– Improve performance
– Support reuse & interoperability
– Are: instructionally sound, interactive, engaging, & motivating
4
Focus on Relevance
Enhanced Learning Experiences - Pushes the current state of Web-based
instruction
*Increased interactivity *Learner motivation *Immersion *Team Training
*Simulations *Embedded Training *Intelligent Tutors *Mission Rehearsal
Accessibility to Effective Content - Addresses issues & challenges concerning
delivery of remote training through innovative uses of technologies and appropriate
media types
Job Performance Aiding – Addresses refresher and sustainment training issues
*Reach-back capability
*Job performance tools
Pre-Deployment Training - Addresses enroute preparation of the Warfighter for
service and joint operational missions
Collaborative Development Tools - Addresses issues surrounding the collaborative
nature of on-line learning development

Joint Forces Command
ADL Contribution
Use branching vignettes
incorporating realistic
“context” cues; integrate
directed, structured, &
exploratory learning modes
within same LMS interface
Provide input on the success of
moving content across LMSs;
incorporate visual and tactile
feedback

Civil Support Team Training
National Guard Bureau
ADL Contribution
Use cognitive and adult
learning principles;
incorporate scenario-based
exercises for hands-on
practice of FBCB2 skills
Simulate crisis
environment using
commercial game
technology for team
performance-based online instruction; develop
middleware to allow
integration of commercial
game engines

Introduction to the Civil Support Team Trainer (CSTT)
“WE WILL NEED TO WORK AS A TEAM HERE. THE ACTIONS FROM ONE
PERSON CAN EFFECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE ENTIRE SAMPLING
OPERATION. YOU CAN STAY HERE AND PRACTICE THE PROCEDURE AS
MUCH AS YOU LIKE…..”
“IN ORDER TO ENSURE SAMPLES ARE ACCURATE AND VIABLE, EVERY
EFFORT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT SAMPLES ARE NOT CROSS
CONTAMINATED.”
“ON THE SAMPLING MISSION, THE ENTRY TEAM WILL EXTRACT THREE
SAMPLES WITH THE AIM OF DETECTING AND IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE
AND NATURE OF THE HAZARD.”
“SAMPLING IS THE PHYSICAL PROCESS OF EXTRACTING PHYSICAL MATTER
FROM THE INCIDENT SITE SO THAT IT MAY BE ANALYZED AND TESTED
TO DETERMINE ITS COMPOSITION.”
“SAMPLING IS A KEY STEP IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE PRESENCE OF
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING CHEMICAL OR
BIOLOGICAL AGENTS.”

HLA/SCORM Prototype
Partnership between DOD and industry to investigate
integration of simulations into ADL based instruction to
enhance learning.
Areas of investigation:
- Ability to exchange data between SCORM based instruction and
HLA based simulations
- Ability to capture simulation data for future use
- Implications on current standards
- Potential benefits to individual & collaborative learning
14
Tablet PC Prototype
Partnership with Brown University to conduct research
into the use of Tablet PCs in support of small group
collaboration. (In conjunction with Microsoft and the
National Science Foundation).
Areas of investigation:
- Sharing information between Tablet PCs
- Document and note retrieval
- User interface implementation issues
- Benefits using this technology in support of collaborative
learning
To be demonstrated at I/ITSEC 2003
