Cholesterol

What does it all mean?
We need cholesterol for good health just
not too much of it!
It’s found in every cell in the body!
The liver controls the amount of cholesterol
by making new cholesterol and removing
old cholesterol.
The amount in the liver depends on your
diet and inherited factors!
High levels of cholesterol can cause heart
disease by clogging up the bloody vessels
with fatty deposits!
What about the HDL’s and LDL’s and all the
fats?????
So what are LDL’s and HDL’s!
Low Density Lipoprotein
(LDL’s) – the bad
cholesterol!
High density Lipoprotein
(HDL’s) – the good
cholesterol!
Excess LDL’s can cause
up a build of cholesterol
in the arteries
HDL’s carry cholesterol to
the liver for removal from
the body!
The LDL/HDL balance is important, ideally you want more ………..?
Fats
The
level of cholesterol in
the body is affected by fat
in the diet. But it’s not just
the amount of fat – the
types of fat you eat are
even more crucial!
So what are the types?
Saturated Fats – raise blood cholesterol
levels, so you should only eat them in
moderation. (found in dairy products like
cheese, fast foods etc)
Polyunsaturated Fats – tend to lower blood
cholesterol by increasing it’s removal from
the body.
Monounsaturated Fats – evidence
suggests that these also help lower blood
cholesterol.
Both monounsaturated and
polyunsaturated fats are found in foods
such as fish, seeds, nuts and oils from
plants!
