McLeoud SECTION: Tools and Equipment ISSUED: 02-2011 REVISED: ##-#### Objectives • To provide an understanding of the following – Specifications – Use – Maintenance – Safety Specifications • Wood handle • Metal head – Hoe blade on one side – Six rake tines on other side • 45° Cutting edge • Weight- 5 lbs. • Length- 48” Parts Use • Vegetation Fires – Scraping- scrape grass or vegetation to mineral soil. – Cutting- cut or clear light brush – Raking- rake tines can be used to remove debris • Structure Fires – Can be used to move debris Maintenance • Handle – Inspect for cracks, splinters, straightness, etc. – Sand if necessary – Apply boiled linseed oil • Head – Inspect head for cracks, burrs, chips, etc. – Inspect rake tines for cracks, chips, etc. – Sharpen at a 45 degree angle Safety • • • • • Maintain 10’ spacing Carry on downhill side Carry horizontally (parallel) to the ground When passing tool, pass handle first Ground tool with head flat on ground with handle upright • Use gloves when sharpening
