would like to have time to talk to the patient and
his accompanying family member.

The airport Munich is about one hour per car
from the hospital. The intercity train station
Plattling is 30 minutes away.
When does the program start ?
We plan to start the first program on July 1th

A holistic inpatient
program for postacute
brain injury patients
In September 2007 the Asklepios Klinik in
Schaufling / Bavaria will open a new Englishlanguage program for patients for patients with
brain injury. The program is based on the
principles of holistic neuropsychological
rehabilitation and expands the Germanlanguage IRP(Intensiv-ReintegrationsProgram) which has been established in 1993
at the Asklepios-Klinik in Schaufling. It is a 3month program with closed groups of 7-10
participants. The main focus is on the selfmanagement of the cognitive, emotional and
social sequelae of the head trauma. The goals
are to enable the trainees to participate in
three main domains of life: autonomy,
partnership and work. In a therapeutic milieu
approach the key therapy is neuropsychology
including psychotherapy. In addition if needed
the hospital offers a wide range of therapies for
motor impairments, speech and language and
orthopedic conditions.
The program is directed by Dipl.Psych.
Wolfgang Kühne, board certified
neuropsychologist, training in psychotherapy.
Dipl.Psych. Wolfgang Kühne has been director
of the program for ten years and has written
and lectured on the IRP widely. The medical
director of the department neurorehabilitation
is Peter Frommelt, MD neurologist and
physiatrist who together with Wolfgang Kühne
is member of the European Group for Holistic
Neuropsychological Rehabilitation.
For whom is the program suited ?
For patients with brain injury due to trauma,
stroke or encephalitis. The program is for the
postacute phase when the patients or his family
realise persisting problems in cognition,
emotion or behaviour. Often patients started to
return to work and realised that they were
unable to perform at the preinjury level. Most of
the participants of the IRP are between 20 and
40 years. We will admit persons between 16
and 50 years.
The time since injury varies between 15 years
and 6 months.
Which degree of independence in activities
of daily living is expected ?
The IRP being a neuropsychological therapy
program the participants should be independent
in basic activities as dressing, personal hygiene
or eating. More important the participant should
regard not regard physiotherapy or speech
therapy the main objective.
What do we expect from the applicants for
the IRP ?
Some basic self-awareness at least in the form
“Others tell me that there is something wrong
with me“ should be present. We expect the
participants, called trainees to take active part
and the program. Of course some patients have
difficulties to be active due to their brain injury
for which we will search for remedy.
What is Asklepios Klinik ?
Asklepios Klinik is 250-bed inpatient
rehabilitation hospital in Bavaria near the
Danuve and the town Deggendorf. It is idyllic
situated on the hills of the Bavarian Wood. The
hospitals has four departments:
Neurorehabilitation, Cardiology Rehabilitation,
Orthopedic and Trauma Rehabilitation, Geriatric
Rehabilitation.
In the Neurorehabilitation Dept. there are four
neurology consultants.
What are the costs ?
The treatment costs are regulated by state
authorities and the account based on the GOÄ,
the German price regulation for medical
treatment. The usual costs are about 260 € per
day inclusive all hotel, treatment and specialist
consultation fees. The hospital administration
will provide a detailed plan of costs in advance.
