Question
What is the purpose of JDF?
A way of sending job information to printing presses?
A way of standardizing communication between production equipment?
To enable interoperability between different production systems?
To get feedback from production equipment into MIS system?
All of the above?
Anything else?

Out of “the box”
JDF information is great for communicating between in-house
equipment
But it is equally good for communicating with other print houses or with
customers
– Customers creating intent in Adobe Acrobat and exporting to MIS
(Customer-2-MIS)
– Intent created in PrintVis and sent to another PrintVis system for
production (MIS-2-MIS)
This can be seen as a threat or as an opportunity
When the winds of change blows, some people build shelters, while others
build windmills (Chinese proverb)

Lundeby’s JDF Strategy
In Order of Priority
1. Integration with major customers regarding Request
for proposal, Offer, Order, Change Order, Invoice
(MIS to MIS).
2. Feedback from machinery to production planning
systems (MIS).
3. Automatic set up of machinery based on information
for MIS.
Reason for this priority:
The primary prerequisite for efficient production and
effective quality control is having correct and timely
information about what is to be produced and when.
Lundeby: Challenges
Having correct and timely information has been made
more challenging because:
– Size of jobs are decreasing
– Number and complexity of jobs are increasing
– Changes to original order is more a rule than
an exception
– Delivery time decreasing
This means that resources for Quality Check, Quality
Assurance and Quality Inspection has increased
dramatically
Without MIS-2-MIS communication, it would not have
been possible to adapt to expectations of the
customers with regards to delivery time and
flexibility
The (not so distant) Future
• Customer-2-MIS will be a prerequisite for getting orders in the future
• The customers will expect that you can receive intent electronically
and via the web
• The usual e-commerce trading patterns will also apply in this
industry
– Number of quotes will increase
– Quote-to-Order conversion ratio will decrease
• This is going to happen whether we like it or not – the only open
question is how fast it’s happening
• As usual with new opportunities, the first movers get the advantages
first
Conclusion
MIS-2-Production equipment…
• Saves you time and money
• Increases production efficiency
While
PrintVis is able to
create, send and
receive JDF intent
definitions. Is your MIS
able to do that as well?
MIS-2-MIS or Customer-2-MIS communication…
• Increases customer loyalty
• Enables higher adaptability to last minute changes
• Makes it easy for the customer to choose you
• Enables efficient communication between partners in the
production chain
