CARDINAL CHANT
Pre-Game Team Chant
(Adapted from Husker Prayer)
(Said by a team captain and echoed back by the team just prior to taking the
field for competition)
“Dear Lord, In the battles we go through life
We ask for a chance that's fair
A chance to equal all our stride
A chance to do or dare
And if we should win,
Let it be by the code
With faith and honor held high
And if we should lose,
Let us stand by the road
And cheer as the winners go by.”
(The following is echoed at full volume, intensity and enthusiasm)
“DAY BY DAY”
“WE GET BETTER AND BETTER”
“TILL WE CAN’T BE BEAT”
“WON’T-BE-BEAT!!!”

BUILDING THE
CARDINAL
FOOTBALL
PROGRAM
In his book, “Coaching Football Successfully”, Bob
Reade claims that to be successful in athletics at the
high school level you either must outnumber your
opponents or “outprogram” them (Reade, 1994). No
control over enrollment, forces programs to look within
the program itself and discover the essential elements
that are needed to build a successful program.
Successful high school football programs require
planning, organization, leadership, control; and
responsibility for success will depend on the athletic
director, coaches, administration, athletes, parents,
and community.

PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT
THE TRUTHS OF
CARDINAL FOOTBALL
1.
The team over the individual
When you choose to become part of a team, you cease to
exist as an individual – John Wooden
2.
The long term over the short term (decisions, legacy)
Every moment is an opportunity for “life education”
Desire is that Players become great Husbands / Fathers/
employees/ etc.
3.
Inside over the outside (Attitude)
Looking for “changed hearts”, not blind obedience
Happy players play better
Win your players hearts, and they will follow you wherever
you lead them
4.
Everyone is important (Emphasize people not productivity)
Emphasizing productivity often squashes people and always
limits performance
Emphasizing people builds people up and consequently
enhances performance
5.
Love is the Cornerstone
Love each other
6.
Power is manifested when individuals die to themselves for the sake
of the team
Unless a seed falls to the ground and dies, it cannot bear fruit
Servant-Warrior
Football

PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT
THE TRUTHS OF
CARDINAL FOOTBALL
7.
Humility is the mark of greatness
Be teachable
Anyone who thinks he is something when he is nothing is
deceived
8.
Servant Leadership
We come to serve, not to be served
Prioritize developing servant warriors
Leaders lead the way by going first, and going further
(maximal sacrifice)
9.
Pursuing “Winning” as a goal, though not sinful, is a dangerous
motivation
Winning, by its nature, tends to glorify “self” and not “us”
Winning, by its intoxication, produces a climate of “the ends
justifying the means” whereby coaches often compromise
their commitment to prioritize family and player relationships
10. Pursuing “Winning” as a goal inhibits performance
The pursuit of “winning” produces anxiety, tension, and fear
of failure that hinders
relaxation and thus diminishes maximal performance
“Winning” as a motivation hampers performance when
winning a game or a
“winning season” is no longer a probability or possible
11. The goal is to Glorify by Excellence, not winning
Excellence is “being the best that you can be”
Winning games is a by-product of the pursuit of excellence
Bring Glory to the team by running in such a way to get the
prize
Aim for perfection

PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT
THE TRUTHS OF
CARDINAL FOOTBALL
12. The power of the “put-up” game
Put-ups keep us mentally positive and hopeful
Put-ups free us from the negative power of momentum
shifts (makes us circumstance and momentum shift proof)
13. The opponent is our friend
The double win encourages opponents and brings out the
best in both of us
14. We compete against ourselves
Comparing ourselves to others inhibits performance
Pursue closing the “potential/performance’ gap
People come to beat us. We come to be us
15. We only ask for one simple thing. . . .Every last drop of your blood
Maximal effort in all things, at all times
16. Total submission to coaching authority
Players obey coaches: with immediacy / with great effort /
with smiles on their faces
Servant-Warrior
Football
12
PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT
THE TRUTHS OF
CARDINAL FOOTBALL
17. Talk in terms of responsibilities not “rights”
When you become part of a team, you give up rights and
gain responsibilities
18. Start fast. Finish strong
It’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters
19.
Building Men For Others:
False Masculinity – Three components athletic ability,
sexual conquest, economic success
Relationships – Success will ultimately be based on “What
kind of husband, father, son, teammate, brother, or friend
were you?”
Working For a Transcendent Cause – Look past our own
desires
Accepting Responsibility – Having Integrity Is Hard. You
can go one way or the other.
Leading Courageously – Leadership must be based on some
kind of moral, ethical foundation. It takes courage to lead
in the right direction.
Enacting Justice on Behalf of Others – Be “other-centered”.
Act on what is right and wrong.
Empathy – Always try to understand the pain and suffering
of others.

DEVELOPMENT
4 KEYS WE WANT
TO DEVELOP IN PLAYERS
1)
2)
3)
4)
Create "vision" in players
toward the expansion of
character building
Develop Discipleship/Life
Values paradigms for players
within FB context
Teach players how to become
better
students/sons/friends/workers
Educate players in the "how
to" of being solid citizens, on
and off the field

FOOTBALL PROSPECT
CRITERIA FOR PLAYERS
1)
2)
3)
We want great kids (people), who
wish for the kind of FB climate that
we would provide
We are much less concerned with
their athletic ability or potential
College Football playing
proficiency than we are with their
character
We are simply looking for great
people who have interest in
school/community, education, and
who want "more than Football

"WHAT MATTERS", AND
"WHAT LASTS"?

If you want to be remembered with honor......for years and years**
you'd be wise to care more about the TEAM's best than about
your own interests We call that, "Servant Warrior-hood“ If you are
NOT known by your teammates and coaches to be a Servant
Warrior, you may possibly leave here with trophies and rings and
plaques and memories, but you will not leave an enduring
legacy.... neither will you be honored with reverence by future
generations

Please understand that the power of a team is a long list
of individual personalities and characters coming
together to give up their rights, and lay down their
personal glory, for a common goal that is bigger than
themselves Please understand that a team very much
needs individual personalities. However, the enemy of a
"TEAM"........ is individualism?

Please understand that if you start and play and star in your
career at Pleasant Plains High School, and yet if don't have the
respect of your teammates, consider that you have really
achieved very little that matters or lasts Please understand that,
more than talent, more than great players, more than anything
else, TEAM CHEMISTRY is the GLUE that brings out the best in a
team Guard it with your life Please understand that for teams to
have great chemistry, they must do more than simply "respect"
each other. They must truly care about each other "together",
more than they care about themselves individually Please
understand as completely as possible that "we really do need
each other"......every last one of us
Servant-Warrior
Football
16
"WHAT MATTERS", AND
"WHAT LASTS"?

Please understand that Football, though it is a very
physical game, is much, much more mental, emotional
and social. And that is why you must guard your mind
and your heart so aggressively

Please understand that the mind and heart shut down
long before the body does Please understand that if you
DO NOT cherish and nurture and seriously guard the
preciousness of "relationships" within your
team.......between "players and players" and "players and
coaches".....that you nor your team will reach their fullest
potential, and you may additionally forfeit opportunities
that you have worked so hard to
achieve………………….Please understand that when
relationships are compromised, that the mind and heart
shut down significantly, and supernatural forces are
eliminated that come from being truly "together"? Please
understand that when teams emphasize their similarities
and de-emphasize their differences, that power manifests
because players share the same goals and "care" about
the same things. For where there is caring and sharing,
there is power

Please understand that Football doesn't matter at all, and
yet it matters very, very much

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT
"FAMILY"






Most of you will be parents some day
Have you ever thought about what it would be
like if your children disrespected you in
public, or spoke poorly of you in private?
Have you ever thought about the fact that how
you treat your coaches, is how your children
will treat you?
Please trust me on that. You will reap what
you sow That is a Life Truth, like the fact of
Gravity. It can not be circumvented
Most of you will be employers someday, or
will have people under your supervision Have
you ever thought about what it would be like if
your employees did not do what you asked, or
did it grudgingly, or did it poorly, or
complained about your "fairness"?
Have you ever thought about the fact that how
you treat your teachers and your
roommates........ is how your employees will
treat you? You'd be wise to think about that

SOME THINGS TO THINK
ABOUT




Do the right thing
Give it your best shot
And remember that what you have
done or not done to others, will
happen to You
And THEN you will know what it
feels like And if you fail THAT test,
THEN you will wish that you had
been more diligent in learning your
lessons well.......BEFORE you
graduated from school

BE UNCOMMON
“ SUCCESS IS UNCOMMON, THEREFORE NOT TO BE
ENJOYED BY THE COMMON MAN. WE ARE
LOOKING FOR UNCOMMON PEOPLE. “
CHARACTER
1.
WHAT YOU DO IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS HOW YOU
DO IT.
2.
CAN YOU BE COUNTED ON TO DO THINGS THE RIGHT
WAY?
3.
CHARACTER IS TESTED, REVEALED, AND FURTHER
DEVELOPED BY THE DECISIONS WE MAKE IN THE
MOST CHALLENGING TIMES.
4.
IF WE HAVEN’T ALLOWED OUR PLAYERS TO BE
ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEMSELVES, THEN WE HAVE
DONE THEM A DISSERVICE.
5.
CHARACTER DOES NOT COME FROM RULES BUT THE
SMALL ACTIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY THAT OCCUR
DAY AFTER DAY.

BE UNCOMMON
“ HONESTY IS THE FIRST CHAPTER IN THE BOOK OF WISDOM
“
- THOMAS JEFFERSON
HONESTY AND INTEGRITY
1.
INTEGRITY IS WHAT YOU DO WHEN NO ONE IS
WATCHING: IT IS DOING THE RIGHT THING ALL THE
TIME, EVEN WHEN IT MAY WORK TO YOUR
DISADVANTE.
2.
CAN I COUNT ON YOU TO BE MY TEAMMATE,
PERFORM YOUR ASSIGNMENT, AND DO YOUR WORK
IN THE OFF-SEASON?
3.
CAN I COUNT ON YOU TO DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU
WILL DO, NO MATTER WHAT MAY COME ALONG TO
MAKE IT DIFFICULT?
4.
YOU AND YOU ALONE DETERMINE WHETHER YOU
WILL BE A PERSON OF INTEGRITY.

21
BE UNCOMMON
“ LET SOMEONE ELSE PRAISE YOU, NOT YOUR OWN MOUTH
– A STRANGER, NOT YOUR OWN LIPS “
- PROVERBS 27:2
HUMILITY AND SERVANT-HOOD
1.
PRIDE IS ALL ABOUT ME, BUT CONFIDENCE IS A
REALIZATION THAT I HAVE BEEN GIVEN ABILITIES TO
FILL A UNIQUE ROLE THAT NO ONE ELSE IS CALLED
TO FILL.
2.
LIFE IS NOT ABOUT US, BUT ABOUT OTHERS AND
SOMETHING GREATER THAN US.
3.
BLOWING YOU OWN HORN ENDS UP BACKFIRING AND
CHIPPING AWAY AT ANY RESPECT YOU MIGHT THINK
YOU DESERVE.
4.
IMPORTANT BUT NOT INDISPENSABLE.
5.
DO I INVEST IN THE LIVES OF MY TEAMMATES?

BE UNCOMMON
“ TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW YOU WILL BE MORE
DISAPPOINTED BY THE THINGS YOU DIDN’T DO THAN
BY THE ONES YOU DID “
-MARK TWAIN
COURAGE
1.
STAND FOR WHAT I KNOW IS RIGHT
2.
SUMMON THE COURAGE TO BE UNCOMMON.
3.
SOME OF THE MOST REWARDING TIMES IN LIFE ARE
WHEN YOU HAVE TO STAND ALONE.

IN DEFENSE OF
ATHLETIC S
There is a huge volume of scientific evidence that provides a relatively
consistent association between participation in high school athletics and
many positive educational outcomes. Research has noted that athletic
participation has a significant positive correlation with:
1. Academic achievement
2. Good school attendance
3.Good self-concept
4.Sociability
5.High self-expectations
6.Formation of educational
goals
7.Prospects for college
attendance
8.A high rate of retention
(staying in school)
9.Good conduct
10.Optimum physical
fitness
11.Self-confidence
12.Leadership skills
13.Better habits of eating,
sleeping and exercise.
14.Calmness and poise
under pressure
15.The ability to work with
others towards a common
goal.
16.The ability to sacrifice for
the common good.
17.Pride and graciousness in
achievement.
18.The ability to overcome
adversity.
19.Later success in life.

PLAYER RELATIONSHIPS
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
Players don’t care how much you know, until they
know how much you care.
Be positive with the players, but honest.
If you have a problem with a player during practice,
always get with them after practice.
Always end a one on one meeting with a positive
comment.
Role model – Teach them how to overcome
adversity.
Remember you may be serving more than one role
for the player (coach, parent, etc…)
Respect differences.
Treat each player fair.
Be yourself with players.

We will be enthusiastic about CARDINAL
ATHLETICS.

We have high expectations for players and coaches.

We want multi-sport student-athletes.

We will be committed to CARDINAL ATHLETICS,
and we expect the same from our players.

We will have an “open-door” policy, and players are

THE RULES
OUR POLICY IS NOT TO HAVE A LOT OF SET RULES. OUR
PHILOSOPHY SHOULD INDICATE THE EXPECTATIONS AND
STANDARDS OF THE CARDINAL FOOTBALL PROGRAM!!! PLAYERS IN
OUR PROGRAM KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A
“SERVANT-WARRIOR”.

FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL AND ATHLETIC POLICIES.

ATTENDANCE IS A MUST. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND A
PRACTICE, LET THE COACHES KNOW IN ADVANCE. IT IS NOT
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF YOUR FRIENDS TO TELL THE
COACHES.
*THE FIRST UNEXCUSED ABSENCE MEANS YOU WILL LOSE
PARTICIPATION TIME IN A GAME.
*SECOND UNEXCUSED ABSENCE WILL RESULT IN POSSIBLE
DISMISSAL FROM THE TEAM.

OUR PROGRAM MAKES A COMMITMENT TO EVERYONE, AND
EVERYONE MAKES A COMMITMENT TO THE PROGRAM. TRY
TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS AT NON-PRACTICE TIMES.

BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDE: SEE THE “SERVANT-WARRIOR”
PHILOSOPHY, “TRUTHS” OF CARDINAL FOOTBALL, THE
CARDINAL WAY FOR PLAYERS, AND “WHAT MATTERS, “WHAT
LASTS”.

TARDINESS AND BEING UNPREPARED WILL NOT BE
TOLERATED. ALWAYS ARRIVE 10-15 MINUTES BEFORE THE
SCHEDULED START OR DEPARTURE TIME.
Servant-Warrior
Football
40
THE RULES

NO EARRINGS OR PIERCINGS DURING PRACTICE OR A
GAME. PLEASE COVER TATTOOS DURING A GAME.

APPEARANCE: PLAYERS SHOULD HAVE A CLEAN CUT
LOOK. WHEN YOU ARE THE COACH YOU CAN HAVE
YOUR RULES AND OWN APPEARANCE.

ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND TOBACCO WILL NOT BE
TOLERATED – ATHLETIC CODE.

OUR PROGRAM IS LOOKING FOR PLAYERS WHO ARE
WILLING TO WORK HARD, COMPETE, HUSTLE, AND BE
A TEAM PLAYER. THAT MEANS A PLAYER MUST MAKE
SACRIFICES FOR OUR PROGRAM. IF A PLAYER CAN
NOT MEET OUR EXPECTATIONS AND RULES,
SOMEONE ELSE IS STEPPING INTO YOUR PLAYING
TIME!
BE A “SERVANT-WARRIOR”

Dealing With Punishment
We have only two types of punishments. I don’t want it to
be just a question of what type of punishment you are
going to get. That is not the issue. The issue is to DO IT
RIGHT! Do whatever we are saying and do it right, and
let’s get on with it
– (Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech)


PARENT/COACH
COMMUNICATION PLAN
Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations.
By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better
able to accept the actions of the other and provide greater
benefits to children. As parents, when your children become
involved in our programs, you have a right to understand what
expectations are placed on your child. This begins with clear
communication from the coach of your child’s program.
Communication that you should expect from your child’s coach:
Expectations the coach has for your child as well as all the
players on the squad
Locations and times of all practices and contest
Team requirements, i.e., practices, special equipment, out-ofseason conditioning, etc…
Discipline that may result in the denial of your child’s
participation
Communication coaches expect from parents:
Concerns expressed directly to the coach
Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance
Servant-Warrior
Football
48
PARENT/COACH
COMMUNICATION PLAN
As your child becomes involved in the programs at Pleasant
Plains, they will experience some of the most rewarding
moments of their lives. It is important to understand that there
also may be times when things do not go the way you or your
child wishes. At these times, discussion with the coach is
encouraged.
Appropriate concerns to discuss with coaches:
The treatment of your child
Ways to help your child improve
Concerns about your child’s behavior
It is very difficult to accept your child’s not playing as much as you may
hope. Coaches are professionals. They make judgment decisions based
on what they believe to be the best for all students involved. As you have
seen from the list above, certain things can be and should be discussed
with your child’s coach. Other things, such as those following, must be
left to the discretion of the coach.
Issues not appropriate to discuss with coaches:
Playing time
Team Strategy
Other student-athletes
Servant-Warrior
Football
49
PARENT/COACH
COMMUNICATION PLAN
There are situations that may require a conference between
the coach and the parent. These are to be encouraged. It is
important that both parties involved have clear understanding
of the other’s position. When these conferences are
necessary, the following procedures should be followed to
help promote a resolution to the issue or concern.
If there is a concern to discuss with a coach, the procedure should
follow:
Please encourage your child to speak directly with the coach, many times
this can take care of the problem
Call to set up an appointment
If the coach cannot be reached, call the Athletic Director at (512)4644031
Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a contest or
practice. These can be emotional times for both the parent and the coach.
Meetings of this nature do not promote resolution
If the meeting with the coach did not provide a satisfactory resolution,
call and set up an appointment with the Athletic Director to discuss the
situation

TO THE PARENTS OF OUR
CARDINAL PLAYERS
Dear Parents,
Parents are a big part of our team. We all need your support
both on and off the field. You can either help our team or
hinder it. Please encourage your son to give his best effort
both on and off the field. Our coaches will be doing the same,
but we need your help and support also. As coaches, we are
sure there will be times when you may not agree with our
decisions. However, we will be making decisions for the team,
not for individuals. Football is a team sport, and we will need
your help and understanding in decision-making situations.
Often, we may struggle to find the key to success, but the key
to failure is trying to please everyone.
Please read through “The Cardinal Way” football rules,
expectations, and philosophy so you understand what will be
going on. I look forward to your support of our program. If you
need to talk to me, please call me at school (555-5555) during
my prep period (0:00 – 0:00), or before school (0:00 – 0:00).
PLEASE do not call me at home or talk to me after a game
about your son’s playing time or any other matter pertaining to
our coaching decisions.
Yours In Football,
Brad Pugh
Head Football Coach

In past seasons we have recognized team and
individual effort on the football field by handing out
various helmet decals. Our program wishes to
introduce an award. “The Cardinal Servant-Warrior
Award”, that shall recognize team and individual effort
off the field.
In an attempt to foster our program’s belief in
developing caring, responsible, and respectful young
men; this award goes to those players that have
practiced some random act of kindness towards their
fellow man. If you witness any of our players doing
such an act, please contact me by phone at 555-5555
or at Pleasant Plains High School.
Players must be nominated and all nominations must
go to one of our football coaches. We hope that you
will have the opportunity to witness such an act and
that you will take the time to nominate our players.

Dear Pleasant Plains Faculty and Staff:
The Riverton football game this Friday night, September 00th,
has been designated as Pleasant Plains School District Staff
Appreciation Night.
As a member of the 2012 Cardinal Football Program, I would
like you to represent me as an honored staff member at the
game. Please wear my away jersey to school on Friday, and to
the game that evening so that people will know that you are
representing me. You will be asked to stand and be recognized
with the other representatives during half-time of the Varsity
game.
Often times we become so busy and get caught up with
everything else that kind words and deeds seem to go
unnoticed. On behalf of myself and the entire 2012 Cardinal
Football Team, I would like to thank you for your help, your
continued encouragement, your friendly smile, and your
concern for me.
Sincerely,

Dear Little Brother/Sister,
This coming Friday, September 00th, has been designated as “Little
Brother/Sister Night” for the Pleasant Plains High School Football Team. Would
you please be my guest at the football game? Both you and your parents will be
admitted to the game free by wearing my football jersey. At half-time of the
varsity game all of our special guests will be asked to stand and be recognized.
Playing football and participation in athletics has been a positive experience for
me. It has taught me the value of discipline, hard work, sacrifice, and being part
of a team. I hope that I have been, and continue to be a positive role model for
you and your peers.
Just because you are shorter right now doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll always
be looking up to me. This is our way of saying thank you for caring and for
being there.
Sincerely,
# ______

And they’re watching night and day
There are little ears that quickly
Take in every word you say;
There are little hands all eager
To do anything you do;
And a little person who’s dreaming
Of the day he’ll be like you
You’re the person’s idol
You’re the wisest of the wise,
In their little mind about you,
No suspicions ever rise;
They believe in you devoutly
Hold that all you say and do,
They will say and do, in your way
When they’ve grown-up like you

ANNUAL FOOTBALL
EVENTS
FOOTBALL 101- This event is a great opportunity for Moms or
anyone else who may be interested to spend a couple hours
in their son’s shoes. It is also an opportunity to meet their
son’s coaches. Moms will learn the basics of our program as
well as getting an inside view of the day-to-day operations of
the program. (August 22nd @ 9:00AM)
RED AND WHITE SCRIMMAGE- This is the first look at team in
action. It is also followed by our yearly parent meeting. It is a
chance to meet the coaching staff and to get an outlook for
the upcoming season. (August 15th @ 11:00am)
SLIP N’ SLIDE COOKOUT- After a long week of two-a-days to
begin the year, we finish it off with a slip n’ slide and all you
can eat hot dogs. It is great fun for players, families, and
coaches. (August 14th @ 7:30pm)
FILM REVIEW- Every Saturday, beginning at 9 A.M., the coaches
have a film session available for the Touchdown Club
members. It is an opportunity to watch the previous week’s
game from the same perspective that the coaches evaluate it.
If time permits, it is also an opportunity to get a preview of the
upcoming opponent.

ANNUAL FOOTBALL
EVENTS
TEAM DINNERS- These are our parent sponsored pre-game meals. They
are held on Thursday nights at various parent’s homes. These meals
have been very valuable to our program. They provide a nutritious meal,
as well as a healthy and safe environment for our players to relax the
night before a game. (We are looking for a person to coordinate these
meals for the 2012 season)
TEAM BREAKFAST- These are our team breakfast. They are held on
Friday mornings. These meals have been very valuable to our program.
They provide a nutritious meal, as well as a good way to start the day of
a game. Responsibilities include; bringing and setting out juice, milk,
napkins, etc….(We are looking for a person to coordinate these meals
for the 2012 season)
TAILGATES- Start the Friday night lights experience off right. Several
tailgates will be coordinated throughout the season. Sections of the
parking lot will be blocked off prior to home games. A great meal that
benefits the football team will be available for purchase. (This is new for
2012 and we are looking for a parent to coordinate these events)
HOSTING PRE-SEASON SCRIMMAGES- We want to make it a Cardinal
Tradition to show our hospitality and feed both our team and opposing
teams after scrimmages. These scrimmages are also when the team
collects shampoo, liquid soap, and towels. (August 21st & 27th)
LIFT-A-THON- Our annual lift-a-thon is a great fundraiser that allows our
student athletes to have a hand in raising funds thru their own efforts to
support our program.

56
ANNUAL FOOTBALL
EVENTS
FOOTBALL BANQUET- Tickets are made available for this event
which includes a meal for players, parents, and family. This
event is used to honor the team as well those who excel in our
“character counts” program.
POST GAME MEALS FOR AWAY GAMES- Post game meals are
provided to our players after each away game as they are
getting on the bus for the ride home. After playing a game the
players are very hungry and these meals provide necessary
nutrition to the players. These meals are simple sack lunches
or a similar item. (We are looking for a person to coordinate
these meals for the 2012 season)
COACH’S MEALS – Coaches are often very busy during the day,
between coaching and teaching duties, and these meals
provide a good way for coaches to be able to have a good
meal at the school and still be able to work. These meals are
for lunchtime on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. (We are
looking for a person to coordinate these meals for the 2012
season)

TOUCHDOWN CLUB
Being a member of the Cardinal Touchdown Club comes with its
share of privileges and responsibilities. The support and
involvement of our members are vital to our program’s success.
But more important than “football” success, it is also vital to the
quality of the experience for our players. We want our football
program to be about more than just the sport itself. The
camaraderie, relationships, and memories are more valuable than
statistics and touchdowns. The major role of the Touchdown Club
is to make those experiences possible. Together we can all make a
difference in molding our future fathers, husbands, and leaders.
Show your support of Cardinal Football by supporting our football
program as a member of the Touchdown Club. The Cardinal
Touchdown Club is open to parents, grandparents, family
members, alumni, businesses, and friends of the Cardinals. Each
season there will be a booster club budget based on funds
generated from membership dues. This money will be spent
directly on the players throughout the season.

VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES
We hope that you plan on volunteering because you will get out of this
experience what you are willing to put in. These four years of your son’s
life will fly by and you will want to be as much a part of it as you can.
While it is not mandatory, we highly encourage you to look at our
volunteer opportunities and jump in and do what you can to assist our
program by giving of your time. If you are interested in a volunteer
opportunity contact Coach Pugh or a Touchdown Club officer.
CARDINAL STORE--- The store is one of our most valuable
fundraisers. It is also an opportunity to distribute as much purple and
white merchandise as possible. It is open for business at every
varsity home game and at a limited number of middle school and
junior varsity games. Volunteers that will alternate running this booth
are essential to its success.
MEDIA GUIDE--- Our new and improved media guide is possibly the
best in the state. It is also our number one fundraiser. It takes a lot
of effort from parents, sponsors, and coaches to put together such a
quality product. Volunteers are needed to assist with selling ads to
businesses and volunteers are also needed to alternate selling the
media guides at home games.
SLIP’ SLIDE COOKOUT--- We need someone to help us coordinate
this annual event and additional volunteers are needed to help set
up the slip n’ slide and cook the hotdogs.

someone to coordinate a pre-game tailgate party for people coming
to our home games. This volunteer will be responsible for finding
volunteers to help host the tailgate as well as cook the food.
HOSTING PRESEASON SCRIMMAGES--- Volunteers are needed
to help cook the hamburgers and hotdogs that we provide for the

ADVERTISING
OPPORTUNITIES
Cardinal Media Guide/Game Program
The Cardinal media guide is available at home games and includes
a single game update sheet for each home game. The program
includes player profiles and pictures for all fall sports as well as
advertising. This is the perfect way to advertise to multiple
individuals including our visiting teams. The program is a keepsake
that will be referenced throughout the year and for years to come.
Mini-football toss
During each home game the Cardinal cheerleaders will toss out
100 mini-footballs, 25 at the end of each quarter. This is a great
way to get your company info in front of our fans. These minifootballs are highly sought after during the toss out and are often a
keepsake.
Newsletter
The newsletter provides information regarding all aspects
(schedules, events, pictures, advertisements, etc….) of the
Cardinal Football Program. This newsletter will be available to all
who sign-up for the publication.

ADVERTISING
OPPORTUNITIES
Banners
We will display your 4-color, 3 foot x 6 foot banner at all of our
home games. You will have the choice to display your banner so it
is visible to the home crowd or our visiting crowd.
Quarter Sponsor
You can become the keynote sponsor of a quarter of each home
game. You provide us with copy of your ad and our game
announcer will read you ad (30 second maximum) during each
home game during the quarter that you sponsored. This is the
perfect opportunity to provide giveaways for your business (gift
certificates, etc). We can do this by stamping your ad in the media
guide and each time your ad is read someone will win your gift
certificates.
Personal/Memory Ad in Media Guide
Our media guide is the perfect opportunity to recognize your
Pleasant Plains athlete, regardless of their sport. In the past these
memory ads have been set aside for seniors only but we are now
opening it up to all grades and sports. This is the perfect way to
show your support of your Pleasant Plains student. Personal /
Memory ads are not allowed to include references to businesses.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There is no guaranteed plan to success. The
ideas mentioned in this vision present concepts
and strategies from a variety of experienced
coaches and athletic administrators that have
been put into practice in successful athletic
programs. Each concept can be expanded upon.
We are seeking to build a program that can use
these strategies for the betterment of the athletic
department. NBA head coach, Pat Riley, says
“Being together as a team is more important than
winning. If you’re not together as a team, any
success you have is not going to last. Achieve
togetherness, achieve unity of purpose, and
success will follow” (Chambers, 1997). The
Cardinal Football Program must be a team with
the athletic director, coaches, administration,
players, parents, and the community all working
together.
