اتاق بازرگاني ايران ̶ سوئيس Iran – Switzerland Chamber of Commerce History of Bilateral Relations During the 17th century, the first Swiss watchmakers settled in the Persian Empire. Economic relations grew stronger in the 19th century, especially in the transportation and banking sectors. In 1873, the two countries signed a friendship and trade treaty. In 1919, Switzerland opened its first consulate in Teheran; which was raised to the status of embassy in 1936. A friendship treaty and a residence/settlement agreement was signed in 1934, which is still in existence. Iran – Switzerland Chamber of Commerce History of Bilateral Relations Because of its political neutrality, Switzerland has represented the interests of several countries in Iran. Switzerland has been representing the consular and diplomatic interests of the USA in Iran since 1980. The economic relations between Switzerland and Iran have traditionally been good, and up until 2008 trade volume was on a continual increase. International sanctions against Iran have decreased the trade volume between the two countries since.
