“ANOTHER WAY”…….
Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now,
bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head,
behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he
knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but
sometimes he feels that there really is another
way, if only he could stop bumping for a
moment and think of it

CULTURE MATTERS - GLOUCESTERSHIRE
"You need to look ahead and say: what’s the future of art?
What is its role in society?
We need people to start to value art so they no longer say: we’d rather have a
hospital than an art gallery.
You want to get to the point where people realise they need an art gallery and a
hospital.”

WHY- CULTURE CHANGES
OUR MANIFESTO – NOT STRATEGY
1. a cultural life that is meaningful, fully accessible and affordable to everyone
2. a vibrant community of artists who feel nurtured and celebrated from first steps
through to international careers.
3. audiences that are engaged, involved and diverse so that the best artists and
companies want to work here.
4. cultural venues, festivals and events across the 6 districts that welcome and
generate fresh, inspiring and risk taking work of an excellent standard.
OUR MANIFESTO
5.First class communication that shouts about and celebrates Gloucestershire’s
cultural life.
6. culture as a visible and cherished thread which runs through all strands of public
policy –social, economic and environmental.
7. An education for children and young people that introduces and teaches arts and
creativity at school and in other settings with the same dedication as numeracy
and literacy.
8. arts and culture “prescribed” as commonly as medicine, providing a preventative
and therapeutic solution for those with health and emotional challenges.
HOW?
•
Work together
•
Look outwards
•
Think and act and talk long-term
•
Stories not strategies- people want a life not a service
HOW?
•
Self organise and self promote.
•
Make it possible
•
Sprinkle it all with playfulness and a bit of mischief
•
Actively include anyone you are uncomfortable with.
•
Be a community not an organisation.
ANOTHER WAY- GLOUCESTERSHIRE
“Create Gloucestershire seems to truly offer a spirit of change, a feeling of optimism
and that great achievements are possible in a time when so much feels
impossible.
Its overview helps the arts to take root and thrive across other sectors - social care,
public health, mainstream education, marketing, sports and well-being.
. These, in turn, bring about a palpable sense of optimism and furthermore actively
encourage the artists and organisations within Gloucestershire to be more
outward-looking, to seize new opportunities for entrepreneurship, brokering new
alliances and helping to sow seeds for a healthier and more robust creative
sector”
