I will bring you a sentence strip and give
you your word
You need to write the word on your
sentence strip and draw a picture that you
think represents that word

Activity
You can work in groups of 3 for this activity
 For this activity, you will use both sides of a piece
of white paper
 One side needs to be labeled Causes and the
other side needs to be labeled Responses
 On each side you will do a Venn Diagram
comparing the US with the rest of the world
 You need to have 3 things in each part of the Venn

You will be given 2 first hand accounts of what was
life was like during the Great Depression
Read these accounts first before doing the next
activity
Using what you’ve learned in your readings and your
notes, you are going to write 3 journal entries from
someone who was living in the US during the Great
Depression
These should be at least 5 sentences each, have
at least 2 facts in each, and be historically
accurate
We will talk about our readings and turn in our
journals by the end of class


What led to the rise
Problems that existed in Germany, Italy,
Japan, and the Soviet Union after World
War I led to new governments
 Totalitarian-Government has total
control of country and citizens lives

Communism

Socialism and Communism were
the main ideologies of the Soviet
Union after 1917
 What occurs?

Communism focused on raising the
working class and decreasing the
wealth and power of upper class
 Wealth distributed equally

Called for all business to be owned
by the government, end private
property, and have no social
classes
 How would the be appealing?
Communism called for a common
education system and no religious
influence
 Socialism and Communism have
same ideas, except communism
calls for violent revolution to make
change

Joseph Stalin

Became leader of the USSR in
1928
 After Lenin
Eliminated all competition in
Communist party and created
Totalitarian System
 Used secret police and propaganda
to gain power
 Collectivized all private farms
(government took control of
everything)

 Increased food production, killed those
who protests
Came up with several five-year
plans to Industrialize his nation
 Improved economy and education
but didn’t give people any rights

 Had opposition killed, persecuted
religion, controlled everything
Fascism

Fascism was popular in Italy and Germany
 People blamed democracy for their
problems
Emphasized a powerful form of
nationalism and power to the state.
 Denied people their individual liberties
and were led by authoritarian leaders.
 Used different methods to create unity
and enforce their power. (Special
Salutes, emblems, secret police, etc.)

Benito Mussolini
Italy’s government was blamed for
economic problems and
unemployment after WWI
 Benito Mussolini formed the Fascist
Party in 1919 and began gaining
political power and eliminated
opponents with Black Shirts (police
force)

 Promised to fix economy and ended a
major workers strike to gain support
He and supporters marched to Rome
in 1922 and forced King to make
Mussolini head of government
 Was given the title of Il Duce, set up a
dictatorship, used secret police and
censorship to increase power and
began invading other countries

 Ethiopia in 1935
Nazism

Nazism-name for Hitler’s political beliefs
was a form of Fascism
 National Social German Workers

German people were dissatisfied with
government and economy in Germany after
WWI
 Treaty of Versailles


Adolf Hitler formed Nazi party and used mass
rallies, special salutes and special troops
(Brown Shirts) to gain support
Tried to overthrow the government in 1923 but
failed and Hitler was thrown in jail
Rise of Hitler
While in jail for failed uprising, Hitler
writes Mein Kampf in prison
 In book, Hitler discusses hatred for
Hebrews, discusses master Aryan race,
and his plan to restore Germany to
power

 Gains popularity
Appointed as chancellor of Germany in
1932 and soon takes power in the
government
 Creates a totalitarian state by
eliminating all other political parties,
using secret police (Gestapo)
censorship and propaganda, and
controlling the economy
 Ignores Treaty of Versailles, builds up
German military and begins invading
countries Germany had lost

 Builds back up infrastructure of Germany
 Created Autobahn and Voltswagon
Japan

Trade with West suffered due to
the Great Depression
 Needed trade and imports (raw
goods)

Started to not trust the West and
its markets, leading them to
want expansionism in the East
as a solution to the market
problem.
 Get goods there

Military took control of the main
operations of the government.
 Emperor becomes figurehead
Because of military rule, they
acted on the policy of
expansionism by invading
Manchuria in 1931 and China in
1937
 Japan was a part of the League
of Nations and withdraw from
them and attacked China


For this activity, you are going to create a foldable that
gives information about the three main Totalitarian
Leaders: Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin
 You can make this however you want
 For each leader, you need to give the following
information





What country did they control
How did they take control
What was their political idea/philosophy
What are 4 things that they did to/for their country when they
were in power
 Also have a picture that represents each leader

Be prepared to turn this in for a grade
