RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR PENNSYLVANIA TREE GROWERS Sarah Pickel – PA IPM Program, PA Dept of Ag PA IPM Program A collaboration between the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania State University aimed at promotions integrated pest management in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings. Using multiple tactics to achieve the best control with the lowest health, environmental and economic costs. 2 My role at PDA Conduct pest scouting on Christmas trees farms of south-central PA. Produce weekly pest scouting report throughout growing season. Carry out educational/ research projects involving IPM on PA Christmas tree farms. 3 PA CHRISTMAS TREE SCOUTING REPORT 4 The Scouting Report Weekly report published from the end of March through the end of June. Contains information on current pest activity in Central PA. Some information from other PA regions will also be occasionally featured. Also features photos, pest life cycle information, management options for these pests, and growing degree day (GDD) totals from several PA locations. 5 6 Conifer ailments addressed: 1.Insect/Mites 2.Disease 3.Vertebrate 4.Abiotic causes 7 Who can use this info? Growers Landscapers Pest Control Contractors Inspectors Educators 8 Not just for PA! The scouting report distribution list includes growers and educators from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and Minnesota. 9 Accessing the Scouting Report Online at: http://ento.psu.edu/extension/christmastrees/scouting-reports Email distribution: Contact [email protected] to be included on the distribution list. This site has many useful links to information about insect, disease and cultural information for Tree growers. You’ll find current and archived scouting reports. PA control sheets can also be found here. 12 13 Conifer Control Sheets Listings of PA registered insecticides/ miticides and fungicides available for use in Christmas tree plantations/Conifer nurseries. Products are categorized by pest type. Compiled by PA IPM Program scouting consultant Brian Schildt. 14 15 16 Disclaimer! The products listed are those that are registered in PA. Out-of-state users will have to verify that the products are also registered in their states before ordering. Sheets were last updated in 2014. Users will have to verify that product registration continues in 2013 before ordering. * Nonetheless, these sheets can still be a useful resource for out-of-state growers! 17 Available online Accessible on the Penn State Christmas Tree Website. • Fungicides: http://ento.psu.edu/extension/christmastrees/publications/2011%20Conifer%20Nursery%20Dis eases.pdfhttp://ento.psu.edu/extension/christmastrees/publications/2011%20Conifer%20Nursery%20Dis eases.pdf • Insecticides/Miticides: http://ento.psu.edu/extension/christmastrees/publications/2011%20Christmas%20Tree% 20Insecticides-Miticides.pdf 18 Newsletters/Blogs Rutgers Plant & Pest Advisory ₋ Email newsletter with pertinent landscape pest information. ₋ Register online at http://plant-pestadvisory.rutgers.edu/rss-2/ Fraser Fir IPM - Jill Sidebottom’s blog from North Carolina - http://fraseripm.blogspot.com/ 19 Online Guides Cornell’s Integrated Pest Management Field Guide for Christmas Trees - http://nysipm.cornell.edu/PUBLICATIONS/field_guide_xm as_trees/field_guide_xmas_trees.asp Michigan State’s IPM Biocontrol page - http://www.ipm.msu.edu/biocontrol New Jersey Weed Gallery - http://njaes.rutgers.edu/weeds/ 20 Suppliers Great Lakes IPM - http://www.greatlakesipm.com/ Supplier for insect traps, pheromones, field supplies. Tracking heat accumulations by recording daily air temperatures has proved useful in predicting the appearance of certain pest life stages. The Growing Degree Day (GDD) method uses daily average temperatures to determine the heat exposure of the pest (or plant). The Growing Degree Days accumulate daily until the required amount of heat for an event is reached. There is a GDD range of during which these events (hatching, emergence, egg laying, etc.) will take place. EXAMPLE: A white pine weevil will emerge between 7-58 growing degree days. By tracking GDDs, growers can know “about” when a pest will be present/vulnerable. 25 Central PA Temperatures A variety of GDD totals collected from various Central PA locations is provided on the Christmas Tree Scouting Report. • • • • Lancaster County York County Schuylkill County Susquehanna County 26 Growers can do the work themselves… 1. Collect Min/Max temperatures 2. Plug into GDD formula 3. Build your GDD total through out the growing season. • These thermometers can be found online at Gemplers and other suppliers. 27 … or use Penn State’s resource. 28 PA PIPE Pennsylvania Pest Information Platform for Extension and Education • Keeps track of growing degree days across Pennsylvania and bordering counties in other MidAtlantic states • Displays the range (via color gradient) on the map each day.
