TEMPERATURE TRACKING
24
Temperature Tracking

For insects, mites and plants, development is influenced by
daily heat accumulations from the air. Tracking heat
accumulations by recording daily air temperatures has proved
useful in predicting the appearance of certain pest life stages.

The Growing Degree Day (GDD) method uses daily average
temperatures to determine the heat exposure of the pest (or
plant). The Growing Degree Days accumulate daily until the
required amount of heat for an event is reached. There is a
GDD range of during which these events (hatching, emergence,
egg laying, etc.) will take place.


EXAMPLE: A white pine weevil will emerge between 7-58 growing degree
days.
By tracking GDDs, growers can know “about” when a pest will
be present/vulnerable.
25
Central PA Temperatures

A variety of GDD totals collected from
various Central PA locations is provided
on the Christmas Tree Scouting Report.
•
•
•
•
Lancaster County
York County
Schuylkill County
Susquehanna County
26
Growers can do the work themselves…
1. Collect Min/Max temperatures
2. Plug into GDD formula
3. Build your GDD total through out
the growing season.
• These thermometers can be found
online at Gemplers and other
suppliers.
27
… or use Penn State’s resource.

DIAGNOSTIC RESOURCES
45
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS TREE?
46
Are you a registered nursery?
• All nurseries registered with the PA Department of
Agriculture are assigned a nursery inspector.
• This nursery inspector makes yearly visits to conduct an
inspection. Also, you can contact the inspector when you
notice a problem or have a question.
• Benefits of having an inspector:
• You can dig trees to sell as nursery stock
• You will have a listing on PA Plants website
• The inspector can diagnose problems in the field, or send
samples to Harrisburg labs for diagnosis.

Not a registered nursery?
• You can still use diagnostic labs in Harrisburg.
• Send samples to: Tracey Olson or Sarah Pickel
Both located at:
• PA Department of Ag, BPI
2301 N. Cameron St.
Harrisburg, PA 17110
51
How to send a sample
• Branch samples should be sealed in a plastic back to retain
moisture. These can then be sent in a box or padded shipping
envelope.
• Overnighting is not necessary, but the faster the samples are
shipped, the fresher they will be when we get them.
• In the package, include a paper with your name, your farm
name and address, as well as a phone number or email
address that can be used to contact you with results.
