Congenital anomalies 1993-2010
• In 1993–2010, the prevalence of births with major congenital
anomalies remained rather stable.
• Annually major anomalies were detected on average in 3,5 per
cent of births or in slightly more than 2000 births.
• The major periodic variations in the prevalence are associated
with the reforms in the Malformation Register activities. The
smaller random variation is due to the rarity of congenital
anomalies.
• There were no significant differences between the data of the
various malformation types for 2010 and data for previous years.
• During the follow-up period 1993–2010 an average of about 250
pregnancies were terminated annually because of major foetal
structural anomalies and chromosomal defects. The number of
selective terminations of pregnancy has slowly increased, being
about 340 in 2010.
